TERM 1 Clouds, Fog, and Dew all have 2 properties in common: DEFINITION 1 * dew: the ground, vegetation, a car, or similar surface * clouds & fog: need cloud-condensation nuclei on which to form * microscopic particles necessary as matter (a surface) on which water vapor condenses to form moisture droplets * can be particles of dust, sea salts, soot, ash, etc. * hygroscopic nuclei: are very water absorbent condensation nuclei usually of sulfate & nitrate crystals TERM 2 clouds DEFINITION 2 a form of condensation best described as a dense, visible aggregation of minute moisture droplets and/or tiny crystals of ice * classified by altitude of occurrence & by shape * How do they form? A parcel of moist air reaches the point of saturation where the water vapor is changed to liquid water droplets. Either by cooling the air T to the d.p. T OR by adding more water vapor. TERM 3 Altitude: DEFINITION 3 * 4 altitudinal classes: low, middle, high, vertically developed thru the troposphere low: surface up to 2000 m (6500 ft) dont need to know height * primarily consisting of liquid water EX: stratus, stratocumulus, nimbostratus middle (alto): between 2000 m & 6000 m (20,000 ft) * consisting of liquid water & ice crystals EX: altostratus, altocumulus high: between 6000 m & 13,000 m (43,000 ft) * consisting primarily of ice crystals EX: circus, cumulonimbus vertically developed thru the troposphere: surface to 13,000 m * consisting primarily of water at lower levels & ice crystals at higher levels EX: cumulus cumulonimbus TERM 4 Shape: DEFINITION 4 flat: horizontally developed & layered, or stratifrom clouds puffy: vertically developed or cumulifrom clouds wispy: high altitude & made of ice crystals, or cirroform TERM 5 stratus DEFINITION 5 layered, horizontally developpetd & usually low altitudeno rain, no precipitation TERM 6 cumulus DEFINITION 6 bright & puffy like cotton balls, vertically developed TERM 7 cirrus DEFINITION 7 curl of hair.. the cloud found the highest up in the atmosphere & composed of ice crystals TERM 8 nimbus DEFINITION 8 stormy or rainycumulonimbus - thunderstormsnimbostratus - status clouds which are producing rain /snow TERM 9 fog DEFINITION 9 condensation can occur in some instances where the RH is as low as 80% ** As the water droplets get bigger they become visible, thus decreases visibility. If visibility is reduced to 1 km, the haze or cloudis categorized as fog. TERM 10 radiation fog DEFINITION 10 produced over land when radiation cooling decreases air temperature to the dew point temperaturealso called ground fog here or valley fog in mountainous areas because if forms in low lying areasfrom cold air drainage - from cold, heavy air draining downhillforms best on calm clear nights in late fallforms from the ground upward & usually is deepest around sunrise
