Download Exam 2 Questions - Cartography 2: Interactive and Multimedia Mapping | GEOG 4043 and more Exams Geography in PDF only on Docsity! GEOG 4043, Spring 2006 SECOND TAKE-HOME EXAM (50 points) This exam is due by 5 pm on 5 May. Submit the exam by email to Dan. The exam is open-book, meaning you can use paper and Web-based reference materials to answer the questions. However, the answers must be expressed in your own words and must represent your own work, unaided by other members of the class. If you must use a direct quote, be sure to list the source. 1. (10 points) We read a chapter entitled "The Infinite Canvas" from Scott McCloud's Reinventing Comics (2000). McCloud uses the term "infinite canvas" to contrast the digital world of the web from the "finite canvas" of traditional printed comic books, newspapers, and magazines. McCloud points out that comic artists are accustomed to the "finite canvas" and have developed many narrative strategies for telling exciting stories using sequential art. The "infinite canvas" of the web presents opportunities for artists (and cartographers) to develop new narrative strategies, but also undercuts some of tradition methods for sequencing stories in print form. For full credit, identify and discuss one advantage the "infinite canvas" has over the "finite canvas" for narrative art and cartography. Then, identify and discuss one disadvantage that "infinite canvas" has as compared to the "finite canvas" of print. If you haven't kept your copy of this excerpt, go to: http://www.colorado.edu/geography/ foote/geog4043/notes/narrative/McCloud-Pages200-240-InfiniteCanvas.pdf 2. (10 points) In our discussion of the frontiers of visualization, cartography, and GIScience, we focused on recent developments in four areas: 1) visualization; 2) data mining and knowledge discovery; 3) pervasive computing; and 4) distance education. Pick one of these four areas and discuss (with examples) two important developments. Be sure to give your reasons for selecting the topics you discuss. For additional information, please use the handout distributed in class or refer to the University Consortium for GIS (UCGIS) website http://www.ucgis.org/ and go to the "Priorities" section in the navigation bar. 3.
