Instructions on using various paint tools in appleworks to manipulate images, including filling shapes with color or patterns, changing pixels with tools like the eraser and pencil, and creating graphical text by pouring colors or patterns into text. It also covers the use of selection tools like the lasso and magic wand, and the transformation tools like fill and pick up.

As in painting a portrait, an image developed in paint is done by turning individual pixels (picture elements) on and off in color. Unlike draw objects, images are made up of pixels permanently “coloring” the background. Opaque images do not layer but reassign the color of the pixels. Open an AppleWorks Paint document and create three geometric shapes (paint images). Note that the color selected in the palette automatically fills the images. Although color can be changed, it saves time to set the fill color first if possible. To move an image to overlap one another as in “Experimenting with objects”, you must choose a cutting tool to “cut the painted surface from the background” The selection rectangle tool causes a marquee or “marching ants to surround the image to be selected. The lasso tool shrinks to the object and does not take any additional white pixels. The magic wand selects all adjacent pixels of the same color. However, when the shapes are overlapped, the top shape changes the pixels underneath and that part of the old image is gone. It is possible to separate the images but not to retain the original shape. There are other tools that are used for changing pixels. NOTE: Color (A), pattern (B), wallpaper (C), gradient (D) fill and color and pattern line (E) attributes should be determined from the accent palette or the bottom of the tool bar before using one of the 10 drawing tools in the paint environment • The eraser which in AppleWorks changes the pixels from color to white, “erasing the image”. • The pencil tool changing the color of one pixel at a time from the original color to the new chosen color. • The paint bucket fills or changes the pixels of the same color to the new color in a bounded area. • The paint brush changes pixels to color, texture, pattern or gradient in various shapes and sizes.
