Exponential Models of Population Growth/Decay Excel Project Worksheet 1. a. How does changing the initial population of frogs change the graph? Explain why. b. How does changing the birth and death rates and thus the Net Population Change affect the graph? Explain why. 2. Assume that you own a goat farm and want to raise Boer goats. You begin with 75 goats. Over time, you determine that the birth rate is about 17% per year and that the death rate is 8% per year. Assume that you do not buy or sell any goats. a. Write an exponential equation that could model this situation. b. Use an Excel spreadsheet to calculate the goat population over the next 30 years. c. Use Excel to plot these values and display the scatterplot along with the spreadsheet. Be sure to label all the axes and that the scale is correct. d. Print a copy of the spreadsheet and graph. To do this, select the area that you wish to print. Go to File Page Setup. This will allow you to show the gridlines if you wish under the heading Sheet. Next, go to Print Preview. This will allow you to be sure that it looks like you want it to. When it looks correct, print. e. Next, print another copy showing all the formulas. To do this, press Control and the ~ symbol. This will allow the formulas to show. You may have to adjust column widths in order to see the full formulas. Print this out as well. f. Change the birth rate in the problem to 20% and the death rate to 5%. Use the Excel spreadsheet to calculate the goat population over the next 30 years. How long does it take the population to double? g. Using the spreadsheet from e, how long does it take the population to multiply by 5?
