Impact of Malnutrition on Academic Achievements in Senior High School Students, Cheat Sheet of Mathematics

An academic research paper that investigates the relationship between nutritional status and academic performance among senior high school students. The study uses the Body Mass Index (BMI) to determine nutritional status and examines the academic performance of students in terms of their average grades. The research also discusses the impact of malnutrition on cognitive abilities and academic achievement, as well as the importance of proper nutrition for brain development and optimal learning. The study was conducted among Grade 11 students in Alangalang National Integrated High School during the 3rd semester of School Year 2021-2022.

Nutritional Status and Academic Performance of Senior High School Students MHEL JERRO O. VELARDE. JOSHUA M. NAVARRA ACKNOWLEDGEMENT Above all this challenging academic endeavor would have not turned into reality without the providence and guidance of our beloved Lord who showers the researchers with wisdom and make things happen in this time. ABSTRACT Nutrition plays a significant role in the healthy development of the students. According to UNESCO (1984) nutrition is a factor that affects the students earning ability and skills before and after a student is in school. Several studies on the relationship between malnutrition, wasting, stunning, and academic performance have been published and all of them have reported important associations between nutritional status and academic performance Understanding the nature of the relationship between health and education is important to determine the exact relation between them. This study was conducted to determine the relationship between nutritional status and academic performance of every Senior Highschool Students. This study shows that the majority of the respondents are underweight which may be due to the lack of political commitment and action of central governments. Also, the academic performance of these students has the highest academic performance among other students. CHAPTER I INTRODUCTION Background of the Study Nutrition is a vital component of human health, life, and brain development through the entire lifespan. It plays a significant role in the healthy development of the students. Healthy foods provide the body and mind of the students with the energy that is essential to grow, feel well and do well academically, be active, stay healthy and learn more. Also, proper nutrition helps prevent student’s health problems such as eating disorders, obesity, dental cavities, absences, iron-deficiency anemia and many more. Poor health and malnutrition in students may affect cognitive abilities, necessary for learning process and academic achievement. And determining the nutritional status CHAPTER II REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE This chapter discussed the articles that were taken from reliable authors who conducted the similar studies on the Nutritional Status and Academic Performance of SHS students. Thus, the previous studies and literature that are related to this study were reviewed to provide basis for this study, comprising the nutritional status academic performance, and effect of Nutritional Status and Academic Performance of SHS students. Nutritional Status The EFA Global Monitoring Report (UNESCO 2011) states that those students, who are underweight due to poor diet and malnutrition, are having disease and are less able to concentrate at school. Malnutrition is a chronic condition which is a result of over- or under-consumption of any or several essential macro- or micronutrients in relation to the individual’s physiological and pathological requirements (Ecker and Nene 2012). Malnutrition is when the body does not get enough nutrients and does not function properly. This could also lead to a dangerous condition to the body. Poor nutrition can cause by a lack of food or an unbalanced diet that is missing or insufficient in one or more nutrients (Chinyoka and Naidu, 2013). Children who do not consume adequate amounts of key nutrients, including calcium, potassium and vitamin C may be unable to work to their full potential at school (Nabarro et al. 2012). Protein energy malnutrition, iron deficiency, anemia, and Vitamin A deficiency are poverty conditions. In general, this can cause the decrease of resistance to disease. Thus, Malnutrition results to illness, brain damage, delayed physical growth, delayed development of motor skills and delayed intellectual development and has determined that poor nutrition in early life can bound long term intellectual development to the students (Lacour & Tissington 2011:525). A lack of protein, also to the Protein Energy Malnutrition, led to poor school performance by children and caused young children to be lethargic, withdrawn, and passive, all of which help affect social and emotional development. As stated in Amy’s research there is a relationship between nutrition and cognition as well as psychosocial behavior; this relationship has been highly under-researched, but there exist many studies that look at the nutritional benefits of many proteins, vitamins, and food substances as they affect learning and brain function. Our schools have the position and is playing a vital role in preparing and sustaining our students’ potential learning abilities and benefiting their social behaviors by supplying nutritious breakfasts and lunches during school days. Providing the nation’s low-income youth with nutritious food has been a problem for over a hundred years. To see that food insufficient students were adequately fed, school lunch programs began during the Great Depression of the 1930’s. Proper nutrition is critical to maximizing brain function and enhancing learning. Helping children develop healthful habits from a young age will aid them in reaching their optimal potential. The lack of political commitment and action of central governments may be one of the factors (or even the main reason) for failure in reducing malnutrition, whereas in other developing countries a functional nutrition policy in place may be the driver of success (Nabarro et al., 2012). Academic Performance To determine the academic performance of the students the Level of achievement in courses should be measured. Higher institutions based their employment on student's academic performance and graduation rates (Hanson, 2000). In addition, (Ali et. al, 2009) cited that country's economic and social development relies on the academic performance of the students as it produces the best quality graduate who will become great leader and manpower of the country. Research studies shows that student's performance depends on many factors such as learning facilities, gender and age differences that can affect student's performance (Harsen, Joey B., 2000). Learning outcomes have become phenomenon of interest to all and this account for the reason why scholars have been working hard to untangle factors that militate against good academic performance (Aremu and Sokan 2002) Relationship of Nutritional Status and Academic Performance Nation’s progress depends largely on the quality of education of such a nation. And health is an important factor in school and in higher education. It has been argued
