PSYC 202 - Psychological Research II Homework Assignment #_____ Due: Factorial ANOVA 1. A random sample of welfare recipients was assigned to a new job training program. Another random sample was assigned to a conventional job training program. Subjects were also classified according to whether or not they had a high school diploma. All of the subjects in each group found employment in the private sector at the end of their training. Their hourly wages are shown in the following table (rounded off to the nearest whole dollar). High school Diploma-conventional training: $6 $4 $5 $8 $8 $9 High school Diploma-new training: $8 $7 $9 $7 $5 $4 No High school Diploma-new training: $7 $5 $6 $8 $9 $9 No High school Diploma-conventional training: $5 $7 $6 $4 $5 $4 2. The general relationship between performance and arousal level is described by the Yerkes- Dodson law. This law states that performance is best at a moderate level of arousal. When arousal is too low people do not care about what they are doing, and performance is poor. At the other extreme, when arousal is too high, people become overly anxious, and performance suffers. In addition, the exact form of the relationship between arousal and performance depends on the difficulty of the task. A researcher designed two puzzles, one easy and one hard and tested all of the participants (N=22) on both the Easy puzzle and the Hard puzzle. Half of the participants were randomly assigned to the Low arousal group (N=11) and half to the High arousal group (N=11). Arousal was manipulated by the use of reinforcement (the Low arousal subjects were told, and received, a $1.00 prize if they completed the puzzle the fastest, whereas the High arousal group could win a $500.00 prize). The data (time to complete each puzzle) from all 22 participants are presented below. Low - Easy 34 30 22 31 43 29 26 28 35 34 27 Low - Hard 31 25 33 29 36 25 31 25 32 28 30 High - Easy 37 33 41 38 45 35 29 39 38 40 36
