Abstract It is indeed a challenge and a privilege for every student to enter college in order to amplify their capabilities and to establish a more secured and successful future. However, one of the most arduous tasks for every college student is to choose the course that they will pursue. Most of the students encounter difficulties on completely deciding their course due to several factors from internal and external environment. This study aims to determine the factors influencing Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) student’s choice of course in San Pascual Senior High School I. The researchers used Descriptive Statistical Analysis to present and analyze the gathered data through tables. Also, the mean of each factors was computed and ranked according to the mean of each item in the questionnaire. Moreover, the respondents selected by the researchers are the Grade 12 students of Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) strand of San Pascual Senior High School I. After analyzing and interpreting the data obtained, the researchers came up with the following conclusions: It appears that the things one should consider in choosing a course are the following: interest, financial stability, skills, passion, happiness and personality. Furthermore, based on the perspective of the respondents, the factor that influences the most with regards to choosing a college course are the interest, academic ability, goal and skills. Moreover, based SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 1 on the experiences of the students after considering the factors above, they said that the course they chose motivates them to study hard and they gain higher grades by choosing the right course. However, one of the most arduous tasks for every college student is to choose the course that they will pursue. Most of the students encounter difficulties on completely deciding their course due to several factors from internal and external environment. Edmonds (2011) stated that the process of choosing a college major can be very convoluted. It is a cause of great anxiety, because for most it will likely be one of the most important life decisions they make. Thus, the risks of choosing the best path through a more illuminated and successful future should not be overlooked and neglected. Decision making is the best way to get one’s satisfaction and is considered as the best-required thing to do to have a successful and a very satisfying life. One decent decision of a person always affiliates a huge impact in his or her life. In this case, deciding which course to take in college is one of the hardest decisions especially for those who are moving up to senior high school since they have to carefully choose their strand according to the course that they will want to pursue. In addition, the process of choosing the course requires vast self-reflection and self-assessment in order to hone a more competitive individual, not just academically, but also in life. SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 6 However, several ways can be performed in order to be enlightened about which path is the best for an individual. According to Alba et al. (2010), one of the suggested elucidations is for the parents to talk with their children. Then it is up to the child whether they will agree or not. Other solution involves letting the child decide on their own. Deciding for oneself helps the individual to develop and progress in life. In connection to this, students until these days still undergo the same uncertainty regarding their choice of courses, thus, this leads the researchers to conduct this study in order to find out the factors influencing the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) students’ in choosing their course. The current study entitled “Factors Influencing Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Students’ Choice of Course in San Pascual Senior High School 1” attempts to determine the factors that influence the choice of course of the students. Statement of the Problem General Objectives: This study aims to determine the factors influencing Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) student’s choice of course in San Pascual Senior High School I. Specific Objectives: This study aims to answer the following specific questions: SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 7 According from Elison (2009), there are things that you should consider when choosing a college course: your interest, aptitude, money matters, other people’s feedback, and your commitment. Interest is a learned motive which drives a person to occupy himself with activity when he is free to choose what he will do. Interests are important because they serve as a source of strong motivation to learn. Before choosing a career, it is important for the students to identify their interest and then identify a career that aligns with their interest. Aptitude refers to a natural ability to do something. Choosing a college major also entails an assessment of your skills and talents. It is important for the students to know the difference in what they want and in what they are good at because it will help them in choosing the course that would fit their skills. Money matters because it will dictate what course you can or cannot afford. Money matters should therefore be part of your college major choice. Other people’s feedback refers to the people around the students. There can be a good feedback that student can get, and there can be a bad one also. The feedback or advice of others is one of the factors that the students might choose whether they will base their decision from the advice of other which includes the guidance counselor, parents and some seek advice from the students. This factor can either mark and may change the perspective of a SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 10 learner. Commitment. Choosing a college course requires you to look inwards and assess your commitment to your chosen path. Conceptual Paradigm This section presents the input, process and output of the present study. The concept of the study “Factors Influencing Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Students’ Choice of Course in San Pascual Senior High School 1” is best expressed on the conceptual paradigm. Factors Influencing Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Students’ Choice of Course in San Pascual Senior High School 1 Figure 1.1 Input, the researches want to know the factors influencing the STEM students’ choice of course in San Pascual Senior High School I. In that case, they SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 11 OUTPUTPROCESSINPUT The researchers are expected to find out the The researches want to know the factors influencing the STEM s l cted STEM students of San Pascual distributed survey questionnaires about the different factors like Interest, Parents/ Family, Peers/Friends Influence, In-demand, Salary, Length Of Course, Financial stability, Academic Ability, and Goals. In the process, the selected STEM students of San Pascual Senior High School I will be given a survey questionnaire to gather information about the topic. Output, the researchers are expected to find out the factors influencing the STEM students’ choice of course in San Pascual Senior High School I. Significance of the Study This study entitled “Factors Influencing STEM Students’ Choice of Course in Pascual Senior High School I” will be beneficial to the following people: To the school’s guidance counselors. As part of guidance counselors’ expertise regarding career orientation, this study would help them assess the students prolifically. With this study, they will have wider reviews and ideas on how to handle or counsel students who needs guidance about what course fits their interests, God-given talents and abilities. To the students. This study will help them to develop their decision-making ability and to be aware of why they should consider their ability, interest, passion and skills when choosing a course. To the parents. This research aims to help the parents understand their child’s endeavor and guide them when it comes to decision-making in setting their goal in the near future. To the future researchers. The findings of the study will serve as basis and guide in conducting new researches. SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 12 This chapter presents the literature relevant to the concepts of the present study. It also analyzes some studies and materials from the Internet to provide sufficient background and information essential for the accomplishment of this study. It sought to collect claims of previous studies about factors influencing the students’ choice of course. Education is a vital tool used in the contemporary world. It is used to mitigate most of the challenges faced in life. The knowledge that is attained through education helps open doors to a lot of opportunities for better prospects in career growth. Education helps the students identify and achieve the profession they want to be in the future. Some students grow up knowing what they want to do in life. These are the students who will go the extra mile to reach their dream job. However, students often settle on a different path due to many factors they can’t control. Students will research their chosen career path and explore everything about it. The salary and benefits of that job do not play a role in this decision. In a research study the factor “match with interest” rated over job characteristics, major attributes, and psychological and social benefits in importance when students choose a major (Beggs et al., 2008). Students will seek out schools that are well known for that major or trade. Most students today are more concerned with the amount of money they can earn. However, there are a few students who pursue their dreams (Mcglynn, 2008). SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 15 According to Robert (2008), “the way you feel about yourself influences the way others feel about you” explains that most of the youth today are forced to be like their parents – to choose the universities that they have been to, to choose the course that they have been or to continue what they preferred, and still, they are pressured to do well with it. Ability of an individual as defined by an online dictionary site called, “The Free Dictionary by Farlex” is: (a) the quality of being able to do something, especially the physical, mental, financial, or legal power to accomplish something (b) a natural or acquired skill or talent (c) the quality of being suitable for or receptive to a specified treatment. Relating the given definitions to the researchers’ subject matter, the students’ abilities make a great impact on their decision regarding which course they will go for. High school students must meet the required average grade of the subjects for their selection of course. For example, a student who has a vision of being an engineer cannot take engineering courses if he falls short on mathematics; and a student cannot take BS Accountancy if he is not fond of Accountancy at all. Thus, the ability and the performance of a student distress his decision on what course he will take. Young people’s dreams and ambitions may take many forms and go through many phases and changes. Some are practical and realistic; some can never go beyond wishful thinking. But among the main factors that help determine the life they will eventually have are the kind of schooling they get and the type of work they do (Alba et al., 2010). In addition, if a person’s ability does not support the course they like, they need to think for alternatives that would suit it. It is better to go for a course in SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 16 which the student is interested and which his abilities go well rather than going for a course in which the abilities of the student are not compatible which can result to failure. Choosing a course is a really tough decision to make but the students must always put on their mind: “Will I able to manage this course with my abilities whether intellectually or physically?; Am I confident enough to pursue with this course?; Will I be able to get scores that will make me pass my subjects?; After studying this course, what career am I going to get and where can that lead me?; Am I making good decision with whatever course will I go for?” As students, they are more aware of their abilities and the courses they can cope with. From that point, after assessing their limits, they can already anticipate if they can qualify to that particular course. The decision can be done based on what field the students excel. It is one of the bases that can be implied. If a student prefers a course that is not suitable for him, he may not meet the Grade Point Average that in either way may result to failure or even disqualification. According to Alba et al. (2010), it will be best if the students identify their abilities which they can utilize for the future. It will also be coherent if they pursue the course they are comfortable with, which holds their interest and with what can meet the arrangement of their abilities. The people who most affect student’s choice of major are friends, parents, teachers, and alumni (Herren et al., 2011). The people affecting a student’s career choice tend to provide more insight about the career field including factors SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 17 and affordable fees. Universities in the Philippines do not commonly issue financial aids such as academic scholarship and discounts easily. They have several qualifications and requirements in order to gain these financial aids. In line with this, families of students who cannot qualify on financial aids have a hard time sending their children to universities. Logistic regression is used to explore the role that peers play in the college-going decisions of a sample of low-income urban minority public high school graduates drawn from the National Education Longitudinal Study (NELS: 88) database. According to Alba et al. (2010), peer pressure becomes a factor in career decision making because individuals who are closely involved with their friends tend to be involved in the decision of their friends. Take example in career choice, if one person chooses Nursing, other will also be forced to choose Nursing because they don’t want to be independent from them. Sometimes peers influence others to take that certain course because they think that it is better for them to take that particular course. As a result, the choice they made is not suited for them. Advantages of deciding career on their own: It makes them more independent, they are responsible for their actions, they are more aware of the pitfalls in a particular avocation, they are prepared to face the consequences of a wrong choice in career matters rather than blame their elders, they choose what they like the most. Disadvantages of deciding career on their own: teenagers are immature, they are impulsive, and indecision can make them falter in their choice, rash decision, succumb to peer pressures, known in all types. SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 20 Personality Type. Understanding your Personality Type can assist your career development in a number of ways. First, it can help you select a career field that is a good fit for your personality make-up. Second, it can increase your awareness of your learning style so you can better benefit from career related education. Third, understanding your personality preferences can help you better manage Job Challenges that inevitably rise their ugly heads during the course of our career. Last. knowing your Personality Type, and especially knowing the specific details of your individual type can provide, will aid you in a job search, both in marketing yourself and in evaluating opportunities that arise. (Venable, 2008) Furthermore, studies have shown that students will choose a major that they think will fit their personality type (Mihyeon, 2009). The confidence that a student has can determine how far a student will go with their education. Students who believe in themselves have more confidence and are more likely to go for what they want instead of settling for something that is comfortable. The personality of students can also play a role in choosing a major. According to studies, students who have an investigative personality are more likely to major in science fields. Students with an artistic personality are more likely to major in arts and in interdisciplinary fields. Students who are very social people are more likely to major in the social sciences (Porter & Umbach, 2008). SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 21 According to the study of Alba et al. (2010), one of the biggest problems of a particular graduating high school student is to decide on what course they will take in college. Accepting the fact that there are mere factors that affects their decisions. The factor that affects the most with regards to college course decision-making is the financial stability of the family. With this, the student finds it complicated to decide whether to go for the course that he or she desires or to go for the course that his or her family can afford. Synthesis There are some factors that impact the students from high school seniors’ decision in what path they should take. Choosing a course should not be taken for granted and this study aims to know the factors that influences the STEM students’ choice of course. The literatures that the researchers have searched are the factors that influences the students’ choice of course. Although McQuerry, Finlayson, Saysay, Palos & Drobot have different statements and studies, they still said that family and parents influences the students in their career decision. Herren et al., (2011) also stated that parents, friends, teachers, alumni have the most influence in the students’ choice of course. On the other hand, Alba et al., (2010) said that it would be best if the students identify and assess their abilities which they can utilize for the future. He also said that it will also be coherent if they pursue the course they are SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 22 Meanwhile, the researchers took samples from various sections of Grade 12 of STEM strand to form 120 respondents based on the simple random sampling. Table 1: Respondents of the Study Strand Section No. Of Population Percentage No. of Sample STEM 12-A 58 33.92% 40 STEM 12-B 57 33.33% 40 STEM 12-C 56 32.75% 40 Total 171 100% 120 Data Gathering Instrument The researchers used a survey questionnaire to gather data about the factors influencing the STEM students’ choice of course in San Pascual Senior High School I. In addition, the questionnaire also contains items about the factors influencing in choosing course, various things to be considered in choosing course and various experiences of the students after choosing their course. Data Gathering Procedure SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 25 Beforehand, the researchers asked for the permission of the school principal of San Pascual Senior High School I through a letter of approval which was given before the survey was conducted. The researchers devised a survey questionnaire which were disseminated to 120 randomly selected students of Grade 12 STEM Strand. The researchers assisted the respondents on how the questionnaire should be answered. The researchers collected the survey forms in order to analyze and interpret the collected data to come up with the conclusions and results. In addition, the items inside the questionnaire will be answered based on a number representing their corresponding responses. On tables A and C of the questionnaire, the items will be answered according to this scale: 4 - Strongly Agree 3 - Agree 2 - Disagree 1 - Strongly Disagree Meanwhile, for table B of the questionnaire, the items will be answered according to this scale: 4- Strongly Influencing 3- Influencing SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 26 2- Less Influencing 1- Not Influencing Statistical Treatment The researchers used the following statistical treatment to present and to analyze the gathered data through tables. The mean of each factors was computed and ranked according to the mean of each item in the questionnaire. Points Point Scale Verbal Interpretation Verbal Interpretation 4 3.25-4.00 Strongly Influencing Strongly Agree 3 2.50-3.24 Influencing Agree 2 1.75-2.49 Less Influencing Disagree 1 1.00-1.74 Not Influencing Strongly Disagree The Weighted Mean This will employ to determine the frequency counts and percentage distribution of the respondent’s choice. The mean of each item was computed through this formula: Where: SAN PASCUAL SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL I SAN PASCUAL SENIOR 27 mean of 2.63 with an interpretation of Agree. Lastly, “Other People’s Feedback” got the lowest rank and weighted mean of 2.53 with an interpretation of Agree. To conclude, various things to be considered in choosing course of the students got the average mean 3.14 with an interpretation of Agree. Interest got the highest rank on the various things to be considered in choosing a course. Alba et al. (2010) said that “It will be best if the students identify their abilities which they can utilize for the future. It will also be coherent if they pursue the course they are comfortable with, which holds their interest and with what can meet the arrangement of their abilities”. Financial stability comes in second. According to Ismail’s study (2009) on the mediating effects of information on college choice indicated that students are satisfied with college choice based on their information satisfaction with respect to financial factors (external influences) which include financial aids and affordable fees. Universities in the Philippines do not commonly issue financial aids such as academic scholarship and discounts easily. They have several qualifications and requirements in order to gain these financial aids. In line with this, families of students who cannot qualify on financial aids have a hard time sending their children to universities. On the other hand, Other People’s Feedback got the lowest rank in which other people that surrounds the students give them feedback regarding their experiences in their course.
