June -July I will generate a wide range of Plastic 3D Printed sculptures. August –September I will make twenty 3D printed sculptures and prepare the work for electroplating and patina along with photographing and sending images to various juried and solo exhibitions. Expected outcomes and benefits I am conscious of the impact these sculptures will carry. The general sense of change and number within the new work relates to my growth and expression as an artist/teacher at the present time. I am confident that this research would result in a successful new direction in artistic identity. The viewer will regard the work as a contribution to the ECU students and the contemporary art/sculpture community because of the exhibitions, the aesthetic value, the conceptual impact and the longevity these materials posses. Using the results of my research, I will continue to give lectures workshops and demos at conferences on the process both nationally and internationally. I feel the work is ready for major changes in numbers and complexity. My resources, together with the grant, will provide an appropriate base for my proposed research. Because of the high cost of this project, I feel it would be best to target the grant fund towards my supplies and materials necessary for the development of the project. This body of work will continue to be exhibited regionally and nationally from the month of April 2006 to present, I have produced 20 wall relief sculptures. I was successful in creating a series of shows with my work. These shows are listed at the bottom of my report. The objective of my research activity grant was to investigate creating wall relief sculptures of my travels using stainless steel, copper and brass. I experimented with different methods of attachment as well as patina and color enhancements. These tests and methodology have proven to be a great asset to my work and the results were very successful in the direction of combined materials for my work. These tests have made it possible for me to achieve consistent results. My methodology consisted of: 1-Using my travel photographs or aerial landscapes; I transformed these images into broader abstract forms in cardboard as a first step. 2-Then I made several tests with the materials in regards to attachment and surface treatments. 3-Next step was creating several small-scale combination copper, stainless steel and brass wall reliefs. 10 Grant Money: $9,500 – 35 sheets of Stainless Steel – 50 – 1//4” Stainless Steel rods – 10 angle stainless steel My contribution: $500.00 Silica Sand - $3,000.00 bronze - $700.00 transportation - $400.00 slides and posters - $2,500.00 tools and Misc. Supplies - $600.00 Assistance/help Art for the Visually Impaired 1998 Hanna Jubran I have made great strides in producing and exhibiting a body of work for the visually impaired during the activity grant (summer stipend)period. This body of work for the blind, will be shown nationally and internationally. From the month of May 1998 to present, I have produced eight wall reliefs and ten bronze and soapstone sculptures. I have several contacts and feel confident in creating a successful series of shows. A great deal of time has been spent e-mailing and phone calling. It was also necessary to learn and experiment with Braille writing. The Braille writing will be used for messages on the work as well as texture, to make a strong impact. I am pleased to report a scheduled show of my work for the blind that will take place in Cologne, Germany October 1999. I plan to install the show myself and help with the development of a suitable poster to attract my chosen audience. This poster will include acknowledgment of financial assistance from the research/activity grants committee. Although this work is meant to solicit the blind it will be equally interesting to the general public. I have enclosed some slides of the work that will be a part of this show. Research continues and plans are culminating for this show and I have found the work inspiring for me and a new interest to others. I will incorporate these experiences into my teaching and give a slide presentation to my students and the public. A portion of the work I have thus created, has been exhibited in Milwaukee, Wisconsin at the Art Elements Gallery. This show was not primarily based for the blind, but I incorporated discussions with the patrons that the intention for these will eventually be to expand my audience to the blind. I am working on the possibility to show this body of work at Duke University. I am still working on the dates this can occur and how their gallery space will enhance my attempt at attracting my intended audience. I have also produced several new wall relief sculptures that will be incorporated in my traveling exhibition and will have their first showing at the Greenville Museum of art in Greenville, North Carolina. The work will also be shown at the Mendenhall Student Gallery and the outer banks in Nags Head. The Nags Head show will coincide with their annual visually impaired conference October 14,1998. The specific aim of my proposal is to develop and establish a traveling exhibition for the visually impaired. I have met all the goals that I put forward for myself during this time span. I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone involved in the selection process for considering my grant proposal. Because of your support, I was able to make a difference in my artistic research in regards to creating an audience of the visually impaired. As Petea A. Angele once said,” To be humane is to tap powers within me and use them wisely both for my benefit and for the benefit of the community.” Thank you again. Sincerely, Hanna Jubran 11 Bronze Castings As Plan As An Experiment 95-96 Hanna Jubran Project Summary: The objective of my research activity grant was to investigate some of the new bronze casting techniques in industry in relation to experimenting with bronze and stone combination sculptures. My research included experimenting with all of the commercially produced mold materials for the casting of bronze. Some of the casting methods I tested were, sand molds, ceramic shell molds and traditional plaster investment molds. These tests and methodology have proven to be a great asset to my work and the results were very successful in the direction of casting bronze to fit stone carved pieces. These tests have made it possible for me to achieve consistent results in the surface of the bronze, keeping shrinkage of the bronze to a minimum but also retain the strength of the bronze. This in turn, will speed the process of finishing with patinas and polished surfaces with a minimum of physical effort. My methodology consisted of: 1-locating a readily available and cost efficient material to use as the mold matrix. 2-making several tests with the material in regards to strength and surface results. 3-creating several small scale combination bronze and stone sculptures using the best mold and casting methods. 4-creating seven large scale combination bronze and stone sculptures from the small pieces used for models. 5-the final stage consisted of repeating what I learned through my tests on the large combination sculptures using the method of bonded sand molds. This research benefited students who watched the process, teachers who may use these techniques and other artists I have come in contact with (through my exhibitions and workshops). In accord with my models (using the bronze and stone combination technique I designed)of the smaller scale, the results of my creative effort was successful. This success is shown by my exhibitions of this work and awards that I have received. These supplies include, 2000#’s of bronze at $4,006.00, four tons of granite at $2,732.00 and various tools/supplies at $762.00. My personal expense for the project was $8,500.00 at it’s completion. I have met my desired goals. I would like to thank everyone involved in the selecting me for this grant.
