Your assignment is to visit one location of oceanographic interest in the local area from among the following listed sites. Specific directions to and required questions for each of the following sites can be found online at the course website. Start early; don't leave this assignment to the last minute. For all field trips, be clear about the date and location of your trip. Questions should be answered on a separate page, about 1-2 pages in length. Most of these questions require observations and critical thinking skills. Many of the questions do not have only one right answer. To receive credit for the assignment, you are REQUIRED TO SUBMIT PROOF THAT YOU VISITED THE SITE, such as a park map, bridge toll receipt, or entry receipt. Photographs are acceptable as long as they are on photographic paper. Digital images on plain paper will not be sufficient. Locations you may visit 1. Alviso Marina County Park (salt evaporation ponds, Guadalupe River), San Jose 2. China Camp State Park (tidal marsh), San Rafael 3. Point Reyes National Seashore (Limantour Spit - sand dunes and wetlands), Point Reyes 4. Marin Headlands & Rodeo Lagoon (views, geology, naturally closed tidal estuary), Golden Gate National Recreation Area, Sausalito 5. Point Isabel (mudflats, tidal marsh, tide levels), Richmond (NOTE: this site must be visited twice to make tidal observations) 6. Ocean Beach (beach), San Francisco** 7. Point Pinole Regional Shoreline (tidal marsh), Pinole 8. The Bay Model (U.S. Army Corps of Engineers physical model of the San Francisco Bay & Delta System), Sausalito **You may substitute another beach for Ocean Beach, but be sure to be clear about which beach you visited, and when you were there. ***Directions to each fieldtrip site can be found online, at the course website. To receive full credit for the assignment, you must turn in: (1) the time and date of your trip, and site visited (2) proof that you visited the site (3) answers to 4 site-specific questions (can found online at http://eps.berkeley.edu/www/courses/epsc82/fieldtrip). You should look at these questions prior to the excursion, as in some cases they direct you to observe or make measurements of specific coastal features. (4) feel free to go with a friend, or in groups, but answers must be your own individual work.
