MC202, SPRING 2012 FINAL EXAM REVIEW GUIDE Professors Edozie, Craig, Jezierski, Qing, El-Rayes and Friedus INSTRUCTIONS AND GUIDELINES a. The exam is on Friday, May 4, 2012 to 10:00 am to 12:00 pm in c102 Wilson Hall i. You will have two hours to complete the exam. Due to the processing of 300 of you, we may need an extra 10 mins and thus begin at 10:10. In that case, please prepare to end the exam at 12:10 pm. b. Note that your final exams are 30% of your total course grade c. There will be 2 sections – An “ID” Short Answer Section and an Essay Section d. There will be 9 short answer “ID” questions; choose 6 questions to answer. i. There will be three sub-sections in this section – choose two questions from each sub-section – Middle East (Nasr/Module 4a), China (Bergsten et al/Module 4b) and Euro-America (Ash/Module 5) ii. For each short answer, you must draw your responses from the books, course materials, lectures and media assigned in class from the date after spring break to April 20th iii. For each short answer question response, your answers must contain a definition (conceptualize /theorize/philosophize); an explanation (topics are usually contested so be analytical about your response referring to arguments or counter arguments about the concept/theme); and provide one illustrative example that deepens the definition of the concept/theme (cite details/evidence) iv. Spend approximately 45 minutes on this section- write no more than five sentence responses for each question. v. This section will be 30% of the total final exam grade. e. There will be 2 required essay questions; that is to say, you must answer both of them. i. For essay organization and coherence, use paragraphs to delineate clusters of complex ideas. Introduce your response to the question in your beginning paragraph of the essay (posit as an argument/thesis/theme that guides the rest of the essay; synthesize your argument if there are multiple questions or iterations to the question), provide support for your response in a sequenced order, using as much course referenced detailed evidence as possible (be illustrative and analytical), and conclude by summation (even if a small paragraph at the end). ii. For essay question responses, reference books, course materials (including lectures) and movies assigned since after spring break to April 20th. iii. Spend at least 30 minutes on EACH question – write at least four to five double-spaced exam pages for each question iv. This section will be 70% of your total final exam grade f. Purchase 2 blue books to write the exam i. Bring in two exam books to exchange for 1 (one) ‘stamped’ JMC blue book. MC202 Faculty will inspect your second ‘un-exchanged’ blue book. g.
