- Pakistan invaded itself- Waziristan  for help complain that it crashed  pakistany gov’t awake from “sleep” and finally confronting Taliban
- USA is extremely pleased Pakistan is attacking place we’ve been attacking
- Why is alqueda and Taliban in Waziristan?  USA attacked Afghanistan(home of Alqueda/Taliban)
-US economic sanction against Sudan
- Afghan Taliban only cares about Afghanistan  Pakistan  totally different Taliban (really crazy)

NOTES:
-US fertility rate = 2.1 (not growing)  we only have a growing population because of immigration
- Europe/Russia fertility rate low and has low immigration
- 90% of Canadians live less than 100 miles from USA

-US aids Pakistani drives on Taliban (quietly)
-India wants improved ties with Pakistan
- What happened this semester to make sure that Pakistan doesn’t crass and burn?  India relieved tensions by Pakistan and the US has secretly helped Pakistan fight the Taliban

- Who are soviet satellite states?  Poland, Romania, Hungary, Bulgaria, East Germany, and Czechoslovakia
- Russia hated western Europe because:  Russia was “dissed” after WWI  “the west” abandoned Spain during fascist periods o wanted to fight Germany but not Spain’s dictator  “the west” helped fight against the Bolsheviks  “the west” has invaded Russia many times  NATO= “ass kicking”  anti-soviet group  Stalin utterly convinced that “west” was bull crap  commies had started war with Finland

-Gulf stream brings warm water to UK and Sweden and Norway. (moderates temperature because it’s a big body of water)
- as we go east it gets colder  continentality  land works less as a moderator than water

- Abdullah Abdullah quits Afghan election  Hamid Karzai wins.. by default - Colombia and USA= tight  Venezuela thinks we are tight with them to keep an eye on Venezuela - Hilary Clinton was in Pakistan  even though it is in “ the crapper”  Said she thinks gov’t knows where al queda is and is lying
- US and Pakistan relations not so tight now ( people there hate us)  India and US however are becoming tight
- India relieves tension by taking troops (15,000) out of Kashmir  to make relationship between them better
- India pulled back 15,000 troops from the border to let Pakistan focus on “terrorist crap” in their country

- President Obama is on his first Asian tour
- Japanese and US agreed to move the Okinawa military base from Japan
-1st president to sit in on an ASEAN meeting  Obama gets back in the game  meeting went well he kicked ass
- at the sidelines of the ASEAN meeting, Obama met up with Burma pres. Myanmar to free Suukyi(lady) a democratic leader in jail  1st contact with Burma in a longggg time  ASEAN group backed up Obama  ASEAN’s goal is to be like EU not NAFTA
- Obama also attended APEC trade block meeting  didn’t go as great  sidelines obama meets with Medvedv to reduce arms and they signed a treaty  the also said they would be on USA’s side that Iran shouldn’t be a nuclear power
- APEC meeting will occur in Honalulu, Hawaii  they must wear traditional garb at meetings (grass skirts and coconuts!!)
- Obama is the 1st pacific president  he gets Asian cred
- in china Obama went a sit and chat at a college this is seen as weird because heads of states don’t usually “sit and chat”

- Last year (2008) a survey was conducted and Stalin was voted the most popular Russian.

Japan: country and region to itself
- Asia and Japan aren’t that common’ more like team west than Asian

Koreans still hate Japanese people tension carries over  1905 Declared war on Russia which was the biggest empire in the world at the time (Ruso- Japanese war) and Japan wins  1910 Annexed more of Korea  1917 Annexed more of Russia  1931 Take Manchuria  1931- 40 Established more footholds in China and other southeast Asian nations  Japan was embargoed by US (oil)  US afraid of Japan taking over Asia  1941 Attacked the USA (Pearl Harbor)  1941-45 invaded every nation in Pacific and South East Asia o Japans “warning” to US US doesn’t listen and Hiroshima and Nagasaki go BOOM!!  Japan did control SE Asia, costal China, Indonesia, and Koreas  They had every intent to take India and Australia  Japan campaign was excessively brutal o Rape of Nanking Japan took over and “raped” the city  Japan is like Britain (stand offish of EU) o Both rather play with America  Japanese were inot biological warfare, tested on half of population in Asia o Plague infested rafts, poison water supply, etc. o US took all of Japan’s biological warfare at the end of WWII  Team WEST  Possible future UN security council member ( US are bribing – if they get an army!)  ASEAN associate  Partying at the 6-Party talks  Increasing interaction with China  Japanese Self- Defense Force - Japan has nuclear energy/ not nuclear weapons

CHINA: powerhouse of east asia
- 1) Big difference between East and West China  China and US pretty close in size  Climate wise is same as the US (at least the East is.. not so much the west)
- Most Chinese people in the East (1.3 Billion)  most of them are Han Chinese in the east
- Uyghur- northwest trying to get independence  more Turkish/Muslim than Chinese there
- China represses Tibetdoesn’t want them to leave
- Ethnic problems in China are disappearing  Chinse Han people are moving to Uyghur land and Tibet, so they are mostly “real Chinese aka Han” people there
- The most guarded border of China is North Korea
-2) China has been a world power forever!  China: the world’s oldest state  5000 year old history  Historically the center of the action  Authoritarian regimes

- where is it Arabian peninsula, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, most of north Africa (above Sahara desert) NOT TURKEY
- 4 unifying factors of the Middle East (biggest region by size)  its dry o exception fertile crescent isn’t dry  Oil  middle east got the majority of oil on earth o Exception- most of middle east oil is located on the Persian gulf basin.  They are all Muslim (why North Africa is with middle east) o Saudi Arabia= focus of Islam where it started and spread from (which is why Osama wanted all American bases etc. out of Saudi Arabia he considers himself a holy warrior) o Two holies cites= Mecca, and Medina (pilgrimage) 
