Why did they let the others join?  Russia was weak so they let the others join and now they aren’t  - western Europe climate is moderate  - Europe has half the size of north American region but double the population  -role of water- moderate temperatures if your closer to big body of water (which Europe is)  -Gulf stream brings warm water to UK and Sweden and Norway. Myanmar to free Suukyi(lady) a democratic leader in jail  1st contact with Burma in a longggg time  ASEAN group backed up Obama  ASEAN’s goal is to be like EU not NAFTA  - Obama also attended APEC trade block meeting  didn’t go as great  sidelines obama meets with Medvedv to reduce arms and they signed a treaty  the also said they would be on USA’s side that Iran shouldn’t be a nuclear power  - APEC meeting will occur in Honalulu, Hawaii  they must wear traditional garb at meetings (grass skirts and coconuts!!)  - Obama is the 1st pacific president  he gets Asian cred  - in china Obama went a sit and chat at a college this is seen as weird because heads of states don’t usually “sit and chat”    NOTES:  - Russia= cold, hard life  - 1905 Russo Jap. Extra Lecture 12/12/2009  NOTES MIDDLE EAST:  - where is it Arabian peninsula, Iraq, Iran, Egypt, most of north Africa (above Sahara desert) NOT TURKEY  - 4 unifying factors of the Middle East (biggest region by size)  its dry o exception fertile crescent isn’t dry  Oil  middle east got the majority of oil on earth o Exception- most of middle east oil is located on the Persian gulf basin.  They are all Muslim (why North Africa is with middle east) o Saudi Arabia= focus of Islam where it started and spread from (which is why Osama wanted all American bases etc. out of Saudi Arabia he considers himself a holy warrior) o Two holies cites= Mecca, and Medina (pilgrimage)   - How big is the Sahara Desert?  USA + Alaska is just the Sahara Desert  - Islam is the newest world religion – 600 AD  religion went much further than middle east ( more Muslims outside the middle east than in the middle east)  Top Muslim countries: Indonesia, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh  - Shi’ ite vs. Sunni  not too much of a difference between them  Shi Islam= Iran  Sunni Islam= every where else  Pres of iran= shi (picture)  Indonesia pres= sunni (picture)  Exception= Israel and the jews  -madras… religious schools that were funded by wahabist Saudi Arabians  - 1919 Ottaman WWI loss Europeans take over  - Saudi Arabia maintained their independence.. because the Arab tribes helped Europeans during war  - Israel :  Zion movement for the jews to regain their historic homeland  Diaspora jews were kicked out their promised land by the Romans  1800 years other folks lived in palistine/isreal.. 1900s British control this land  1900-17 jewish immigration, then WWII accelerated it  1947 Plan proposed  1947 Plan passed  1948 Israel declares independence o Arab countries attack  Israel always wins, Arab countries always lose when war o Egypt and Syria both attacked Israel and Israel beat them badly and took some of their land  - Egypt was the first to recognize the right of Israel to exist  in doing so the got back Sinai  Jordan has also recognized  Egypt has been US ally since they recognized Israel  - what country even though a big ally of the US will never recognize Israel as sovereign?  Saudi Arabia - WHAT IS LEFT?  West bank and Gaza Strip  - Persian people are Iranian  -21st century power struggles: Battle for influence in the Middle East  Team 1: the Arabs – Sunni/Egyptians power core (US likes this team)  Team 2: Turks—major power player o Sunni, Turk, Secular (dive mosque and state) o Turkey is remains of last piece of ottoman empire o Turkey: more western than the Middle east but not as western as Europe and strongest democratic, fully Muslim country, strongest democratic fully Muslim country  UN, NATO, WTO, member (EU? -- future)  Turkey doesn’t have interests in controlling middle east, it is a mediator!  Dipmplomacy  Team 3: Persians o Shiite, Iran power core w/ Hezbollah o Main struggle is between team 1 and 3 Arabs and Persians
