Advanced Crime Scene Investigations Final 1. Discuss in detail the tasks of the Preliminary Investigation. Secure the scene as quickly as possible Determine the crime scene, then re-determine if necessary Control the crime scene; log everyone and everything that comes onto or goes off of the scene Everything In-between (i.e. remembering where evidence is, what occurred, calling investigators, medical examiners, EMT's, etc...) 2. Discuss in detail the tasks of the latent investigations.  Talk to responding officer and read reports to determine what occurred  Clear the scene of all non-critical personnel  Redetermine the crime scene, if necessary  “Walk” the crime scene in an effort to deduce what happened  Label all evidence based on your deduction of what happened  Take pictures & sketch all evidence and surrounding crime scene  Re-interview witnesses and suspects  Examine physical evidence and review lab results  Identify, locate, and apprehend the suspect, if not already in custody  Recover stolen property 3. Discuss in detail the Determination of the Crime Scene - use as many variables as possible. When making a determination as to the boundary and borders of a crime scene, it is useful to think of an inner and outer perimeter. The inner perimeter covers evidence of particular interest (i.e. dead bodies, potential murder weapons, and signs of a struggle) or paths of entry to and exit from the scene. The outer perimeter is set farther back than the inner perimeter; this helps control access points into the crime scene, locate secondary crime scenes, helps ensure the chain of custody for evidence, etc... 4. Discuss in detail the three major tasks at a crime scene investigation. Overall Coordination: Depending on the nature of the crime, the resources needed at the scene, and other variables, crime scene coordination may be provided by the investigator in charge as he moves from one point to another, a mobile incident command van, or temporary “HQ”. The senior, or lead, investigator is ultimately responsible for what happens at a crime scene; he secures necessary equipment, warrants, M.E.'s, etc... Technical Services: The PD, or TBI, processes a crime scene with the backing of their respective crime laboratories. They are primarily concerned with the actual processing of the scene for physical evidence for use in an investigation and trial. Investigative Services: Includes interviewing witnesses, conducting and documenting any neighborhood canvass, field/station interrogation of the suspect if he or she is in custody, and carrying out and recording the results of a vehicle information canvass
