FINA 3113 Financial Systems Fall 2014 Professor: Dr. Helena He Class time: 9:00 – 9:50 am on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday Office hours: 10:00 – 11:00 am on Monday to Friday Office: McCool Hall 310H Phone: 662-325-2421 Fax: 662-325-1977 Email: wh222@msstate.edu Website: http://misweb.cbi.msstate.edu/~COBI/faculty/professor.shtml?wh222 COURSE OBJECTIVES: This course reviews the basic operations of financial markets and institutions including the ways in which funds flow through an economic system from lenders to borrowers and the markets and instruments that lenders and borrowers employ to complete this process. The course also covers financial innovations and their impact on the financial industry as well as the economy as a whole. After completing the class, students should be able to understand the functioning of financial markets and institutions and accurately analyze the current financial events. TEXTBOOKS AND MATERIALS REQUIRED: Anthony Saunders and Marcia Cornett, Financial markets and institutions, Fifth Edition, McGraw-Hill/Irwin, 2011, ISBN 978-0078034664 A Texas Instrument BA II Plus financial calculator Current issues of financial magazines and publications are strongly recommended, such as The Wall Street Journal http://online.wsj.com/public/us, Fortune, Business Week, and Financial Times. COURSE GRADES: The total points available for this course will be allocated as follows: Percentage of Total Exam 1 18% Exam 2 18% Exam 3 18% Final Examination 24% Quizzes 17% Class Participation 5% Total 100% 1 Final letter grades will be based on the percentages earned. The instructor reserves the right to revise the weight of point allocation. Grade Percentage Total A 90% or higher B 80% - 89% C 70% - 79% D 60% - 69% F Below 60% EXAMINATIONS: Four exams will be given during the course. First three exams will be worth 100 points each, 18% of the total grade. The exams will cover conceptual issues and problems in the form of multiple choice questions. Extra readings assigned for each chapter and current financial issues related to the course may also be included. The exact coverage of each exam will be announced at least a week before the exam. The final exam is required and comprehensive. There will be NO makeup examinations after the exams are given. However, the students may request to take the exam early with documentations of valid reasons approved by the instructor. QUIZZES: During the semester there will be online quizzes due after the completion of each topic. The quizzes are offered under “Quizzes” tab on Blackboard. Quizzes are designed for the students’ benefits to test their understanding of the topics. It is the students’ responsibility to check Blackboard regularly and complete the quizzes by the specified deadlines. NO makeup quizzes will be given under any circumstance. To account for any unexpected circumstances that may prevent you from completing the quizzes on time, the lowest score of the quizzes will be dropped in the calculation of total semester scores. The unexpected circumstance includes illness, accidents, technical difficulties or internet failure etc. on the due dates. PARTICIPATION: Students are required to participate in class discussions or exercises, worth 5% of the total grade. Students will be required to comment on and discuss current events affecting the theory and practice of financial institutions. Be prepared to contribute to these discussions. These discussions will allow students to practice their analytical skills in the context of financial systems before each exam. Class participation activities can NOT be made up under any circumstance. ACADEMIC DISHONESTY: Academic dishonesty is not tolerated.
