INFANCY 0- 2 YEARS EARLY CHILDHOOD 3-8 YEARS ADOLESCENCE 9-18 YEARS EARLY ADULTHOOD 19-45 YEARS MIDDLE ADULTHOOD 46- 65 YEARS LATER ADULTHOOD 65 YEARS + Key features of growth and physical development at each life stage INFANCY ( 0 - 2 YEARS) Infants grow rapidly, reaching approximately half their adult height by the time they are two years old. At this stage infants are totally dependent on their parents. They will however develop many physical skills. At one year old most infants can walk and by the age of two they can run. EARLY CHILDHOOD (3 – 8 YEARS) Children continue to grow at a steady pace. Learning and developing many of their physical skills, improving their balance and co-ordination . They will start to become more independent as they grow in confidence. LATER ADULTHOOD (65 + YEARS) The ageing process continues with gradual loss of mobility. Older adults will experience a loss of height of up to a few centimeters. Growth and development Physical growth and development continues throughout a persons life but you will have noticed that it is not always smooth. For example: During puberty you may have suddenly grown a few centimetres in a short period of time and they stayed the same height for a while. You may have notices a small child who suddenly goes from crawling to climbing the stairs. From birth, our memory develops and improves and we can start to solve problems and make sense of the world we live in. Intellectual development – describes how people develop their thinking skills, memory and language – for example, being able to learn, remember and recall information. Intellectual Is the understanding and management of our feelings is an important part of our emotional development. As people pass through adolescence into the different stages of adulthood, most usually become better at handling their feelings as they have had more life experience. Key terms for emotional- • Self image • Self esteem Emotional development – describes how people develop their identity and cope with feelings – for example, developing confidence to try new things and learn how to adapt to change. – Emotional Social is the ability to interact with others in society and build relationships. Human beings are social animals and as such need to be able to build relationships with others. Social development – describes how people develop friendships and relationships – for example, developing the confidence and skills to join and participate in a group situation.
