CCDN 371: DESIGN+CULTURE PROJECT 1: FOOD & CULTURE PHOTO ESSAY Like a written essay, a photo essay tells a story but it relies on images more than words to convey meaning. Your assignment is to tell a story about food, design and culture through photographs. Each photo essay must include 12 original photos. You can use analog or digital cameras, and colour or black & white images. Each image should be a minimum size of 5x5in/12x12cm (square) or 5x7in/12x18cm (rectangular). Each image should be accompanied by a caption of no more than 40 words. Below each caption, please identify the type of camera and film (if appropriate) used. The final set of images must be presented in “book” format. For example, your photo essay might consist of a boxed set of mounted prints and captions or a hand-bound concertina book of printed images and text. Whatever format you choose, you must include front and back “covers” with the photo essay title and photographer details. Each photo essay must also include a brief (no more than 100 words) photographer statement that explains the design and cultural relevance of the topic (why you chose the topic you did). This should appear at the end of the book. Step 1: Select a photo essay topic that looks at food from a cultural and/or design perspective Step 2: Choose between a narrative or thematic structure for your photo essay (see page 3 of this handout) Step 3: Storyboard your photo essay (templates are on the Project 2 webpage) Step 4: Take photos Step 5: Select photos and write captions Step 6: Create your photo essay “book” ___________________________________________________________ DELIVERABLE #1 Work in-progress visual presentation Submission format PDF of your storyboard & presentation slides Assessment 10% of the final grade Due Thursday 9 Sept, 2010 Saved to the R: drive CCDN371 folder by 12pm ___________________________________________________________ DELIVERABLE #2 Hand-made “book” with 12 original photos and captions, plus photographer statement Submission format Hard copy + PDF Assessment 25% of the final grade Due Thursday 16 Sept, 2010 PDF saved to the R: drive CCDN371 folder by 12pm Hard copy to Course Coordinator in tutorial
