Rachel Winkler Dr. Shewfelt Food Issues and Choices 30 March 2011 Central African Republic The Central African Republic is a country that is located in central Africa. It is smaller in area than Texas and the climate is tropical; winters are hot and dry. The northern part of Central Africa is scattered with hills, and the southern portion is flat. Floods are very common throughout the land of Central African Republic, and tap water is very hard to find and it is not sanitary. The country is continuously affected by deforestation. Agriculture is very important to the country of Central African Republic; 75% of their economy is based off of agriculture. Their main agricultural products are timber, cotton, coffee, tobacco, food crops, and livestock. The main industries of Central African Republic include the following: diamond mining, sawmills, breweries, textiles, footwear, assembly of bicycles and motorcycles, and soap. The population of Central African Republic is comprised of over 80 ethnic groups. The top four are Baya, Banda, Mandji, and Sara, and French is the official language of Central African Republic. The literacy rate is 48.6%, and the average age of people in this country are between the ages of 15-64. The staple food in Central African Republic is dough like mixture of processed and detoxified cassue. This dish is usually served with beef or fish. Beer and liquor is very popular in this country and is consumed on a daily basis. Chicken and goats is used as currency for special occasions, such as weddings. The security is unstable in this country, and the government cannot guarantee the safety of people visiting the country. Since this country is landlocked and has lack of air access, it makes it a very expensive country to travel to. The main attractions in this country are Chutes De Boali and Dzanga-Sangha National Park. The attraction at Chutes De Boali is huge waterfalls, and the attractions at Dzanga-Sangha National Park are their gorillas and elephants. The most current thing that has happened in Central African Republic is their recent compliance with the Extractive Industries Transparency Initiative. Central African Republic, along with The Kyrgyz Republic, Niger, Norway, and Yemen, has joined this group to improve the transparency in the oil industry. I personally would not enjoy visiting this country; I would not feel safe at all with all the fighting that has been taking place recently. Also, there is not much to see in this country. I do not need to travel all the way to Africa to see waterfalls and animals; America has all that. My home state is very different from this country. One of the main reasons it is different is that it is safe; the government can
