US FOREIGN POLICY: 1970-1920 “CHANGE OVER TIME” Part 1: Change Over Time Write down your selected topic and time period. Identify and describe something within your topic that changed over the selected time period, using specific historical evidence. (5-6 sentences) Identify and describe something within your topic that stayed the same over the selected time period, using specific historical evidence. (5-6 Topic: US foreign policy Time period: 1970-2020 Something that changed: The United States' role in the world. In 1970, the United States was one of two superpowers, along with the Soviet Union. However, by 2020, the Soviet Union had collapsed and the United States was the sole superpower in the world. This change in the global balance of power had a major impact on US foreign policy, as the United States became more interventionist in its efforts to promote its interests and values around the globe. Something that stayed the same: The United States' commitment to democracy and human rights. Despite the changes in the global balance of power, the United States has remained committed to promoting democracy and human rights around the world. This commitment has been evident in the United States' support for democratic movements in countries like Eastern Europe and the Middle East, as well as its opposition to authoritarian regimes like China and Russia. Part 2: Context, Causality, and Contingency Write down the title of the primary source you selected and paste the weblink here "The Cold War is Over" by President George H.W. Bush Lundestad, Geir, 'The End of the Cold War and Cooperation in the End, 1984–1993', The United States and Western Europe Since 1945: From "Empire" by Invitation to Transatlantic Drift (Oxford, 2003; online edn, Oxford Academic, 7 Apr. 2004), https://doi.org/10.1093/0199266689.003.0009, accessed 12 Aug. 2023. Principles for an Autopsy.” Mershon International Studies Review, vol. 38, no. 1, 1994, pp. 11–41. JSTOR, https://doi.org/10.2307/222609. Accessed 13 Aug. 2023. https://www.jstor.org/stable/222609 Describe what is happening in the source. (5-6 sentences) The three sources you provided all discuss the end of the Cold War, which was a significant moment in world history. President George H.W. Bush's speech "The Cold War is Over" declares that the Cold War has ended and that the United States and the Soviet Union are now partners in peace. Geir Lundestad's article "The End of the Cold War and Cooperation in the End, 1984–1993" examines the factors that contributed to the end of the Cold War, including the rise of Gorbachev in the Soviet Union and the fall of the Berlin Wall. Charles W. Kegley's article "How Did the Cold War Die? Principles for an Autopsy" provides a more theoretical analysis of the end of the Cold War, arguing that it was the result of a complex interplay of factors, including domestic changes in both the United States and the Soviet Union, as well as international events such as the Vietnam War and the Cuban Missile Crisis. Describe two other things happening in the United States during the topic or event depicted by your source that are related to it. (5-6 sentences) The Gulf War and NAFTA were both major events that took place in the United States during the end of the Cold War. They were both related to the end of the Cold War in different ways. The Gulf War showed the United States' willingness to use military force to enforce its interests in the post-Cold War world, while NAFTA was an attempt to boost economic growth in the United States and its partners in the Americas. Describe two things that happened in an earlier time period that led to what is depicted in your source. Explain the cause/effect relationship. (5- 6 sentences) The rise of Mikhail Gorbachev and the fall of the Berlin Wall were both major events that led to the end of the Cold War. Gorbachev's reforms weakened the Soviet Union, and the fall of the Berlin Wall showed that the Soviet Union was no longer able to control its satellite states in Eastern Europe. These events created the conditions for the end of
