MARY SHELLEY LIFE Mary Shelley was born in 1797 and his mother was Mary Wallstonecraft, the first feminist of history , and she published the Vindication of the rights of the women. His father was William Godwin, a philosopher and freethinker. In 1812 she met Percy Bysshe Shelley and they married. After they tried to escape by the restricted mentality of the England of that time and they went to live in Switzerland. In 1822 Percy Shelley died in a storm while sailing with a friend and Mary returned to England where he died in London in 1851.Lewis. FRANKENSTEIN Frankenstein is told in the first person by three different narrators: Robert Walton , an explorer that tried to reach the North Pole; Victor Frankenstein, a scientist; the unnamed creation of doctor. The book is written in the form of letters from Walton to his sister. THE STRUCTURE Frankenstein has the structure of an epistolary novel, but it is a combination of different voices and texts. We can find letters, journals and inscriptions. For many years Frankenstein is considered like a gothic novel, but it differs from the typical gothic novel because it doesn’t contain supernatural elements. It can be considered an early example of science fiction. THE THEMES The central theme of Frankenstein is the pursuit of knowledge: Victor tries to go beyond human limits, but this pursuit brings only death and devastation. Linked with this is the theme of the scientist’s responsibility which is clear from the Modern Prometheus. This subtitle refers to the figure in Greek mythology. Humans benefited from this, but Prometheus punished was punished by an eagle. Victor Frankenstein can be considered as the modern Prometheus. Another important theme is the fact that this monster is rejected by everybody and the creature can be seen as a neglected child MARY SHELLEY AND THE CREATURE CAN BE CONSIDERED AN OUTCASTS Mary Shelley is considered an outcast because she had different ideas from the society in which she lived and also she was refused by the society because she was felt in love with a man already married. The creature is an outcast because it is refused by the society because his repellent and terrible appearance. Summary Frankenstein, set in Europe in the 1790's, begins with the letters of Captain Robert Walton to his sister. These letters form the framework for the story in which Walton tells his sister the story of Victor Frankenstein and his monster as Frankenstein told it to him. Walton set out to explore the North Pole. The ship got trapped in frozen water and the crew, watching around them, saw a giant man in the distance on a dogsled. Hours later they found Frankenstein and his dogsled near the ship, so they brought the sick man aboard. As he
