This report contains selected data and accomplishments that document our efforts to meet both student and community needs. Developed by the Office of Institutional Effectiveness, the West Georgia Technical College Fact Book is intended to be a valuable tool that may be useful to those engaged in planning, assessment, preparing reports, writing grant proposals, or other endeavors. West Georgia Technical College offers many outstanding life-long learning opportunities to individuals within our service area. Whether students are looking for career technical training, academic college transfer courses, job skills upgrades, or continuing education options, West Georgia Technical College has a curriculum to meet their needs. Additionally, West Georgia Tech provides classes that prepare adults to take a high school equivalency (HSE) exam, such as the GED or the HiSet. The overarching theme that unifies our efforts is workforce development. We work to improve the education, training, and hands-on skill of individuals so they can be successful in meaningful careers offered by the many excellent businesses and industries in our community. Our dedicated faculty and staff are committed to a long-standing tradition of excellence, serving Carroll, Coweta, Douglas, Haralson, Heard, Meriwether, and Troup counties since 1966. The past year has been a challenging one as we have modified our operations to keep our College community safe and healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are proud of the work of our faculty and staff who have gone the extra mile to keep our focus on meeting student needs so they can be successful regardless of the obstacles we are facing together. This represents 58% of total duplicated enrollment in AY2021, which is an increase of 24.5% over AY2020’s duplicated online enrollment of 17,887 seats. • The demand for online tutoring increased significantly in AY2021. Students used 2,473 tutoring hours in 3,600 tutoring sessions. Compared to AY2020’s use of 1,207 hours in 1,716 sessions, this represents an increase of 105% in hours. • WGTC led all other TCSG colleges in online course accessibility scores, with a running average of 98+% ALLY accessibility compliance rating. • The college provided both on- campus and virtual new student orientation sessions for AY2021 after offering solely online sessions during AY2020. • The advisement center adopted the college’s Webex access to provide virtual assistance for students. The switch from UpSwing to Webex provided the same level of virtual assistance but at a significant cost savings to the college. • WGTC and the University of West Georgia signed articulation agreements for transferability of the college’s AS degrees to be added to current articulation of many general education courses. Arts and Sciences • Fully implemented 27 OERs (Open Educational Resources). This represents 42.86% of general education courses (including labs). • Developed five new courses for the General Studies specializations: o BIOL 2107/L – Biological Principles I/Lab I o BIOL 2108/L – Biological Principles II/Lab II o MATH 1103 – Quantitative Skills & Reasoning o POLS 2401 – Global Issues o SOCI 2600 – Introductions to Social Problems • To increase student success rates, faculty added diagnostics to MATH 1111 and ENGL 1101 in lieu of the Accuplacer entrance testing. • Assisted in planning for the new Carroll campus BIOL/CHEM labs. • Crystal Calhoun earned a BA in German language, graduating cum laude from Oregon State University. Business and Public Services • Prepared and submitted the ACBSP accreditation self-study in preparation for a site visit for 10-year reaffirmation approval. • Renovation of the kitchen and classroom space at LaGrange supported adding Culinary Arts West Georgia Technical College 2021 Fact Book 8 degree, diploma, and certificate programs. • Completed the approval process for a new certificate program, Early Childhood Program Administration. • Added a marketing specialization within the Business Management Degree. • Launched open education resource textbooks for BUSN 1240, ECCE 2202, ECCE 2330, ECCE 2332, and MGMT 1100. • Tanya Byrd-Johnson, Business Technology and Business Healthcare Technology program chair/instructor Carroll campus, completed Open Education Resource training. • Joey Sanders, Accounting instructor Carroll campus, served as the president of the Georgia Association of Accounting Educators for the academic year. Mr. Sanders is the first instructor from a technical college to hold this position as well as the first to host the Annual Meeting virtually. • Joyce Freeman, Early Childhood Care and Education instructor Coweta campus, earned Provisional Trainer Certification Zero to Three and completed ECERS-R training with important updates to the Quality Rating Scale. • Karen Freeman, Early Childhood Care and Education instructor LaGrange campus, participated in Get Troup Reading stakeholder meetings and coordinated a virtual session for the Georgia Preschool Association conference. • Phi Beta Lambda student Sandra Martin placed 8th nationally in Cost Accounting at the virtual National PBL Conference in June 2021. Dual Enrollment • Dual enrollment submitted a formal application for accreditation with the National Alliance of Concurrent Enrollment Partnerships and was chosen as a leader college for the 2021-2022 cycle. • Five full-time faculty members and three adjunct faculty members continued to serve as dual enrollment liaisons, working with high school dual enrollment instructors to ensure quality instruction. • Dual enrollment classes were taught in eight of the nine school systems in the WGTC service area. • WGTC ranked #3 for the academic year in enrollment of alternative diploma students. • WGTC ranked #4 in Career Academy enrollment. • Twenty-four students were enrolled in the GACATT German Apprenticeship program (4 first- year students, 4 second-year students, and 14 third-year students). Health Sciences • The Pharmacy Technology program gained accreditation from the American Society of Health System Pharmacists (ASHP). West Georgia Technical College 2021 Fact Book 9 • Clinical Laboratory Technology student Rosanna Bowles received a National ASCP (American Society of Pathology) scholarship. • The Clinical Laboratory Technology program director received National ASCLP Member of the Year award and ASCLS GA Keys to the Future award. • The Clinical Laboratory Technology program completed the NAACLS accreditation cycle and was awarded a 10-year accreditation. In addition, the program received eight commendations from the review. • The Fire Science program taught initial dual enrollment EMR courses to 13 students at the LaGrange campus. All students successfully passed written and skills exams. • The Dental Assisting program hosted Coweta Samaritan Dental Clinic 16 times during the academic year, helping approximately 80 patients receive dental care. • EduMed.org ranked the Medical Coding program as the #5 program in “Best Online Learning Programs in Medical Billing and Coding." (dip/deg) 85% • Phlebotomy 100% • Practical Nursing 100% • Radiology – Douglas 100% • Radiology–LaGrange 86% • Registered Nursing 86% • Surgical Technology 75% Nursing • Assessments Technology Institutes (ATI) was implemented throughout the ADN and PN programs to enhance course competencies and program outcomes and to improve the NCLEX passing scores. As a result, NCLEX passing scores were above the national average, with overall performance between 88-100% through all ADN and PN cohorts. • Both the ADN and PN programs have full approval from the Georgia Board of Nursing (GBON). Trade and Technology • Precision Manufacturing instructor, Richard Hickmon, was chosen as WGTC’s Rick Perkins Award winner and competed in state competition. • All KIA students who completed the Precision Manufacturing program were transitioned to full-time maintenance employees at Kia. West Georgia Technical College 2021 Fact Book 12 • Successfully trained 101 students in Joshua’s Law Driver’s Education. • Proctored 238 GACE paraprofessional exams. • Proctored 477 TEAS exams for RN and PN programs • Proctored 251 Psychological Services Bureau exams for students seeking admittance into health services programs. Corporate Training • Provided 43,004 training hours to 1,265 trainees at 27 companies. • Awarded welding certificates to 46 inmates from Carroll and Coweta correctional facilities Institutional Advancement / Foundation • The Gap Funding program retained 358 students by guaranteeing their tuition and fees balances due before the college’s “drop date.” The program requires students to repay the amount loaned to them, and 90 percent of all students repay each semester • $101,650 was spent to award scholarships to 155 students • Granted over $10,000 in emergency assistance funds to students and employees with our Project Care program Human Resources • Successfully completed a State Health Benefit Plan (SHBP) audit • Attended a Carroll County Chamber of Commerce job fair • Attended a WGTC Economic Development job fair. • Conducted hiring manager training on Interview and Selection Best Practices • Began the process of developing Standard Operating Procedures (SOP) for all the major HR functions • Communicated and processed pandemic-related programs such as Family First Coronavirus Response Act (FFCRA) and paid vaccination leave to assist employees. Institutional Effectiveness Effectiveness • Submitted the Carl Perkins grant funding application documents, including the new PLANAR (Perkins Local Area Needs Assessment Report). • Monitored, amended, and administered the college’s awarded budget through the year • IE members attended the SACSCOC summer institute and IE Peer Group meetings. • IE members attended SACSCOC reaffirmation orientation Research and Planning • Provided 20+ training sessions/ workshops to staff • Fulfilled multiple data requests • Created and launched multiple surveys • Successfully implemented and analyzed Ruffalo Noel-Levitz Student Satisfaction Inventory • Provided analysis of the Campus Climate Survey • Provided writing and editing services for the PLANAR, which was approved for FY2022 West Georgia Technical College 2021 Fact Book 13 Student Affairs Accessibility Services • Served 104 disability services students • Served 53 special populations students • Served 11 HSE students • Served 26 non-traditional students • Created a toiletry pantry to assist students in need Admissions • Received 4,975 new student applications; admitted 3,239 new students; and 1,921 new students enrolled • Received 2,318 transfer student applications; admitted 1,636 transfer students; and 887 transfer students enrolled • Received 2,208 high school dual enrollment applications; admitted 1,772 dual enrollment students; and 1,398 dual enrollment students enrolled • Received 4,348 returning student applications; admitted 3,917 returning students; and 2,498 returning students enrolled • Received 90 transient student applications; admitted 66 transient students; and 53 transient students enrolled • 76% transition rate from applicant to accepted student; 48% transition rate from applicant to registered student • Virtual Open House sessions had 7,220 views. As a result, the college received 2,868 applications for admissions; Virtual Tuesday sessions netted 1,721 attendees and 528 applications for admission. • Attended the Virtual College Probe Fairs • Sent 114,766 text messages to students using the Mongoose Cadence texting platform, with a 97% delivery rate • Suspended the testing requirement for students through summer semester 2022 due to COVID-19 Career Services • Completed AY2020 Placement Report o 100% overall placement rate o 76.3% in-field placement rate • Career Services Manager named President of the Georgia Association of Colleges and Employers (GACE) Dean of Students • Investigated/adjudicated 102 student concerns (Code of Conduct, Grievances, Concerns, BIT, Title IX) Registrar • Hosted fall 2020 and spring 2021 virtual graduation ceremonies followed by live photo sessions with the president • Held in-person graduation ceremony summer 2021, with 106 students participating; added live streaming service to the graduation • Awarded 1,985 unduplicated and 3,082 duplicated certificates, diplomas, and degrees • Uploaded monthly enrollment files to the National Student Clearinghouse as well as six West Georgia Technical College 2021 Fact Book 14 award files reflecting the awards earned • Processed credentials transcript orders of 6,831 transcripts, with 6,156 sent via electronic/ PDF version • Implemented email notification of academic probation standing and continued use of mailed letters to notify for academic suspension • Added certificate printing to Diplomas on Demand in addition to the diploma and degree Student Life • Held new student orientations with the following attendance: o Fall (virtual) – 1,558 o Spring (virtual) – 1,273 o Summer (in-person & virtual) – 905 • WGTC’s GOAL representative, Elizabeth Rodriguez was named TCSG GOAL Student of the Year and received the grand prize of a new Kia K5. She will serve as the ambassador for technical education until the end of her term in April 2022. • Six WGTC students attended the Virtual Phi Beta Lambda Institute for Leaders and National Leadership Conference. The students competed and brought home one national award – Sandra Martin’s 8th place in Cost Accounting. • Six students from the WGTC chapter of SkillsUSA competed at State competition, bringing home one silver medal in customer service and one gold medal in the Health Knowledge Quiz Bowl (HKB).
