Technological Institute of the Philippines GEC 008- Ethics Morality, Religion, and Other Normative Systems Assignment 1.1 Law, Etiquette, Self-Interest, Tradition Vs Morality Do think that the standards of law, etiquette, self-interest, or tradition can be in conflict with the standards of morality? The standards of law, etiquette, self-interest, and tradition might conflict with morality due to various scenarios. Morality is a collection of norms that helps us live effectively in a community of people, which civilizations believe is right and acceptable. There is a significant contradiction between law and morality, and this conflict displays itself in several specific examples. Some law specialists may declare that law is absolute in today's environment. Its importance is over than all other regulators like morality. There is also a conflict between etiquette and morality, moral behaviors do not require the recognition of good manners, but good manners do. Although the two are distinct, morality is concerned with etiquette and applying moral starting points, and etiquette is regarded as morally correct. As a result, these two may be autonomous regarding their respective etiquette standards. In self-interest, Immanuel Kant (1781) stated that morality must follow anyway, even if it was not in a person's interest. People may reasonably care about their well-being, but a person's well-being is not a source of worth or motivation for action for that person. Lastly, having the conflict between tradition and morality sometimes necessitates breaking with the past, as when people advocated for the abolition of slavery or the right of women to vote. Furthermore, some unconventional, highly innovative practices may be morally excellent. The longevity of practice is not a reliable indicator of its morality.   Law vs. Morality  According to the Anti-rape law (1997), Article 266-C. The Effect of Pardon stated that “the subsequent valid marriage between the offended party shall extinguish the criminal action or imposed penalty. In case the legal husband is the offender, the subsequent forgiveness by the wife as the offended party shall extinguish the criminal action or the penalty: Provided, That the crime shall not be extinguished or the penalty shall not be abated if the marriage is void ab initio.”  Also, in accordance with Article 23 of the Revised Penal Code of the Philippines (1930). The effect of pardon by the offended party which a pardon by the offended party does not extinguish criminal action except as provided in article 344 of this code, but his express waiver extinguishes civil liability with regard to the interest of the injured party.  The marriage extinguishes criminal liability for rape (RA 8353, 1997) said even if what the offender, the husband or partner, did is immoral to the eyes of the majority; he will not be gravely punished due to the relationship and bond with each other or victim. It shows that this law indicates a massive conflict between a person's moral values. It is stated in the previous lecture of moral points, that "Justice" is a vital moral good. Any moral theory that treats justice as irrelevant is deeply suspect. We must get what we deserve and be treated fairly. Thus justice and fairness should have been imposed in this case. Etiquette vs. Morality The customary etiquette does not conflict with morality because morality could split ways with etiquette, especially concerning manners.  There are things to be considered to determine if it does or does not conflict with morality. According to the Cambridge dictionary, etiquette is a set of customs that controls accepted behavior in a particular social situation. It is often a polite act to survive in social situations. Etiquette is the default of one's actions towards society in any country or culture. It could be uncanny and varies for every society. Etiquette could be used as a pretense, and poor practice of etiquette could lead to many social problems and manners.  According to Collin Mc Ginn (2020), good manners require the recognition of good manners, but moral behavior does not, and we do not need to be instructed on how to treat a dog politely at a social event. In addition, a scenario of giving way to the elderly during vaccinations. People should address anyone with respect, with or without hierarchy, mainly anonymous, to establish a good impression or conversation without obligation. Appropriateness and ugliness of manners could always signify something. The etiquette itself pertains to being polite in society while morality does not.  As said in the previous lecture, morality is concerned with immoral or morally right. It did not note that morality is automatically morally right; however, it is distinctive for which is which. A specific scene occurred, given that etiquette must be observed in these areas, but a vaccine did not give way for the elderly during the vaccination. Raising a question, can it be considered that the act is immoral? The act is not accepted, but the act is not also immoral, bad manners, a poor practice of etiquette or amorality could play along with the situation. Moreover, the two may be different, but morality itself concerns They often have opposing views on moral authority, truth, and the meaning of society, which creates various conflicts. Since the others' moral standards and meaning systems differ, efforts performed by one side to defuse or settle the dispute may be viewed as threatening by the other. People may establish negative stereotypes and impute moral depravity or other bad attributes to others who breach their cultural norms while ignoring their vices and follies and believing their group to be completely good.  References: 10 Shocking Rituals, Traditions & Games from Around the World.
