Candidates may use any reference documents Duration: 3 Hours Sitting: Winter 2012 Requirements for this examination: 2 desks per candidate – one for calculations, etc., and a second as a layoff table. Note to Candidates: Please check the Programme Title and the Module Title to ensure that you have received the correct examination. If in doubt please contact an Invigilator. Page 2 of 5 Section A (34 Marks) A1 Glulam Column (17 marks) An internal spaced column in an exhibition centre is required to support permanent and variable actions of 300kN and 400kN respectively. The column comprises two shafts each of six laminations with glued packing pieces as shown below. Verify that the section shown below is adequate by: (i) Checking the assumptions in Cl C.3.1 (2) are satisfied (2 marks) (ii) Axial Capacity a. Deflection in the z direction (i.e. buckling about the y-y axis) (7 marks) b. Deflection in the y direction (i.e. buckling about the z-y axis) (8 marks) Design Data: Glulam strength class GL 32h
