TET1 TASK 1: ETHICS TET1 Task 1: Ethics A Written Project Presented to the Faculty of the Teachers College of Western Governors University TET1 Task 1: Ethics Technology has become weaved into the very fabric of our society. While this change from generations past has been positive in numerous ways, there are also increased dangers, as well. It is important children are educated in safe use of technology. Instructional Setting The setting for the presentation is the computer lab of a Hebrew language charter school. All the students in this school have one period a day of Hebrew language instruction and culture, with a focus on literacy and conversational skills. Since I am a part-time teacher, I do not have a regular classroom, so the class is conducted in the computer lab. This allows me to advantage of technology when planning my lessons. Demographically, the overall student population of this school consists of 2,488 students who are predominately Hispanic, which accounts for 62% of the population. The remaining students are 35% are white, 2% as two races, and 1% are Asian. Audience My classroom consists of five fourth grade and eleven fifth grade students who have been previously identified as gifted through Miami-Dade County Public schools. Students can be designated as gifted based IQ test scoring, or through Plan B, the Miami-Dade school district’s plan for increasing the participation of under-represented groups in programs for gifted students. The students in my classroom leave their regular classroom during the thirty-minute social studies block of their schedule to receive gifted instruction in social studies from me. This presentation will be given to the fourth and fifth grade students in my classroom. The students in my classroom is principally white and Jewish. Historically, the culture of the Jewish population has been a strong emphasis on education, both for the sake of learning, and as a means to survival and success. (Grubin, 2008) Collaborate learning, and the idea that true success is when all have succeeded, is also emphasized in the Jewish educational culture, a concept I experienced growing up and attending classes at my local synagogue. Protective Measures for Safeguarding Electronic Resources In todaychildren face from the internet use are far and wide. 99% of teens use the Internet (Polly Klaas Foundation, 2005), and 70% of children have come across pornography by accident on the web (Rideout, 2001). The school district this school falls under, Miami-Dade County Public Schools (M-DCPS), has an acceptable use policy for internet usage. Those policies include following the Children’s Internet Protection Act, which requires school districts to implement procedures to ensure students do not view objectional material, as well as the Jeffrey Johnston Stand Up for All Students Act, that requires every Florida school district to adopt a policy to prohibit harassment and bullying of both students and staff while on school, including through computer networks. In addition, downloading or installing any unapproved software is prohibited. To comply with the Children’s Internet Protection Act, Miami-Dade County Public schools utilizes the use of an Internet Content Filter. Use of this filter limits the sites students on the internet through a M-DCPS connection can view. For example, sites that contain pornography, advocate violence, or contain hacking tools are unable to be viewed with this filter in place. Bypassing this
