Grading Criteria For Student Paper Presentations March 11, 2008 Each paper presentation should last about 25 minutes and can take no more than 30 minutes. The overall grade for each paper presentation is 30 points and will be assigned based on the following criteria. 1. (10pts) Organization of content. Does the presentation clearly summarize the main points and key insights from the paper? Does it include all the necessary components (e.g., outline, motivation, background, problem statement and proposed solution, related work, conclusion)? 2. (10pts) Technical depth. Do you, the presenter, understand the solutions provided by the paper? Can you answer all the technical questions knowl- edgeably? 3. (4pts) Critique of the paper. Try to place the paper in a bigger context and critique its strength and weakness. What is good about the paper? What is not so good? How does the paper compare to other related work? 4. (6pts) Clarity of presentation. Is the talk clear and well given? Does the audience follow and enjoy the presentation? Try to talk to the audience instead of reciting the slides to yourself. Explain concepts in your own words. Ways that lead to good presentations: • Use examples and pictures to illustrate main points of the paper. Engage your audience. • Use your own words. Explain the intuition behind the ideas. • When answering questions, don’t just say “the paper says ..”. Let us know what you think and what is your opinion about it. When handling questions that you are not sure of, use your own technical insight to give your best shot. • Don’t hesitate to critique the paper. It is necessary to form your own opinion (good or bad) about a paper so that you are not limited by what the authors were trying to tell you. 1
