GROWING FRUIT FOR FUN AND PROFIT FRC1010 - 1 CREDIT SPRING 2012 INSTRUCTORS: Primary Instructor: Gerardo Nunez (frc1010@ifas.ufl.edu). UF faculty and industry representatives will deliver respective lectures. TEACHING ASSISTANTS : Al Kovaleski: sections 2560, 2561 at Fifield Hall (frc1010fif@ifas.ufl.edu). Tingting Zhang, Desire Djidonou: section 1247 at New Physics Building; (frc1010npb@ifas.ufl.edu). COURSE DESCRIPTION: Course lectures cover some of the major fruit and vegetable crops (including citrus, peach, blueberry, strawberry), organic farming, the use of GMO’s, & postharvest handling/marketing. No prerequisites. COURSE WEBSITE: E-Learning at Sakai (https://lss.at.ufl.edu/). All hand-outs will be posted online. Syllabus, attendance and grades will also be posted here. NO TEXT OR LABORATORIES. NO EXAMS . COURSE GRADE BASED ON : 1. Attendance (42%) Attendance will be taken every class period. It is your responsibility to check your attendance online weekly. If you disagree with your attendance you must contact your TA via e-mail within 1 week to correct the discrepancy. If you do not contact your TA within this time period, no changes will be made to the attendance. The seat you have chosen is your permanent one. Attendance will be taken based on where you are seated. 2. Vocabulary Assignment (8%) This 10-question, multiple choice assignment will be posted in Sakai after lecture on 1/20/12. It will cover the vocabulary presented during the lecture on 1/19/12.You will have 7 days (until 1/26/12) to complete it. There will be no make-ups for this assignment. 3. Notebook (50%) It is important to take lecture notes for each lecture and for the entire duration of the lecture. This means that at a minimum, you should have one full page of notes for each lecture, although you may have more. You must have lecture notes and all handouts for each lecture. Your handwriting must be clear and readable, otherwise you will not get credit for the notes. Notebooks are turned in by 5 p.m. on April 12 for review and grading, and must be neat and legible. Graded notebooks will be returned on April 19. Notebooks not picked up by April 24 will be thrown away. Please note the following: 1. Your notebook must be a ring binder. 2. Xeroxed or type written notes are not allowed. 3. Notebooks must include: a. The syllabus b. Table of Contents c. Notes from every class (including April 12th) d. Hand-outs from each lecture (if applicable) e. Pages must be numbered f. Notes must be neat and legible 4. Late notebooks are NOT accepted. If you don’t turn in a notebook, you will receive an “E” for the course. GRADING SCALE: A 90-100 C 70-74 B+ 85-89 D+ 65-69 B 80-84 D 60-64 C+ 75-79 E <60 COURSE POLICIES : Talking during lecture will not be tolerated. If you insist on talking, you will be asked to leave and you will be marked absent. Reading the newspaper, studying for another class, text messaging, using your cell phone or laptop, sleeping or other attention diverting activities will not be tolerated either. If the TAs or the instructor see you continuously conducting any of these activities during class you will be marked absent.
