SS200 Directions for SS200 Reflection Papers (100 points each) Teaching is an intellectual profession. From a seemingly unending list of possibilities, social studies teachers must be able to choose justifiable goals and then ensure that students learn the skills and knowledge they need in order to meet those goals. The ability to accomplish these tasks requires that a teacher be knowledgeable about the various social studies disciplines, a variety of teaching techniques, the factors likely to influence particular students’ ability to learn, and the teacher’s own strengths, weaknesses and biases. In addition to all of this, an effective teacher must constantly evaluate student learning and then alter teaching practices accordingly. Clearly, a successful social studies teacher must be able to draw meaningful conclusions as a result of reflecting upon large amounts of information—in other words, make intelligent decisions. In light of the requirement that effective teachers be reflective thinkers, this assignment requires you to demonstrate an ability to reflect upon a variety of perspectives and ideas related to teaching social studies and to draw meaningful conclusions from them. In order to successfully complete this assignment, you should:  Reflect upon the readings and discussions that have been a part of the class to this point in the semester. The second reflection paper can include discussion of ideas and perspectives from the first part of the semester, but it MUST also include some discussion of more recent topics. You cannot simply pay attention during the first third of the course and then write about it for the rest of the semester.  Draw significant conclusions about teaching social studies based upon your reflection. You can write, for example, about how course readings/discussions challenged, changed, or supported your previous assumptions. You can focus on one main idea or on several smaller ones. You have a fairly wide degree of freedom in regard to what you write. However, in relation to each topic you discuss, you must: o include a clear conclusion you have drawn about it; o support your discussion using course readings (required) and discussions (optional); o explain how this conclusion will influence your actions in the classroom Additional guidelines:  3-5 pages; double-spaced; 1-1 ¼ inch margins  Cite course readings like this: (Parker, 3) and course discussion like this: (9/5, Patriotism). If you want to cite a source not used in class, use APA style  These essays should be written at a university level in regard to grammar, spelling, structure. I will not deduct points for a failure to meet this standard; I simply will not grade it. If your original essay does not meet this standard, you will have the opportunity to re-write it, but it will be counted as late. Revised 12/3/2020
