PEOL 451 - Adventure Education Guidelines for Submitting Reading Assignments Each reading assignment consists of two sections: a summary of the article's content and a reaction section. These two sections must be distinct entities and titled as shown below. A. Content summary section: In this section, state, the main points of the article. Avoid first person (using the word "I") and personal (using author's first name) statements. Focus on the author's words and save your reactions for the reaction section. The following is an example of the beginning of the content summary section: In his article, "Accidents Happen" Professor Ford contends that outdoor enthusiasts are more likely to drown while recreational boating when two events interact: consumption of alcohol and refusal to wear a personal flotation device. Ford goes on to state that males in their mid-twenties are the most likely demographic group to drown while recreational boating and that more drownings occur in southern Oregon than in any other part of the state. B. Reaction section: In this section, you have free reign to respond to the article. Your response may include a combination of the following: your first reaction, what you liked/didn't like about the article, what you agreed with/didnʼt agree with, takeaway learning points, what you identified with, an extension of the ideas in the article, a comparison of the ideas to those in another article, and so forth. The following is an example of the beginning of the response section: This article reminded me of another article written by Professor Ford, which stated that a relatively high percentage of males in their twenties who own motorcycles, crash their cycles after watching any movie featuring Sylvester Stallone. Professor Ford makes an interesting observation, but I believe that movies featuring Arnold Schwarzenegger are just as dangerous to the human psyche as any movie featuring Sylvester Stallone, with the possible exception of Rocky 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 8. Psychological trauma from watching movies from either of these actors can last far longer than a broken leg or busted ribs incurred from flying over the handlebars of a motorcycle. Let's face it, bones heal, but brain cells take a long time to recover after viewing some of the images and listening to some of the comments from several movies featuring these two actors. C. General guidelines and information: • Responses MUST be word-processed. Written submissions will NOT be accepted. • E-submissions will NOT be accepted. • Each review must be no more than two pages. Front/back submissions gladly accepted. • Your responses will be graded based on how well you review the articles and on the attention or depth given to the reaction segment, as well as, yikes, spelling and grammar. • Any article that is utilized for comparison purposes must be properly referenced.
