Hardware and Software Support Test 1 Chapter 1 & 2 Questions with Complete Solution. ATX (advanced technology extended) - Most common form factor for computer systems. Introduced in 1995 by intel Micro-ATX - Smaller version of the ATX form factor. Addresses some new technology created after ATX was created. PSU Connectors - 4+4 pin connector to the motherboard. 20+4 pin connector to the motherboard. SATA and Molex connectors for the hard drives/Solid state drives. PCI-e (8 pin) for power to graphics cards. PSU (power supply unit) - Box inside the computer case that receives powers and converts it to provide power to the motherboard and other devices. Self-Grounding - Method to safeguard against ESD that involves touching the computer case of power supply before touching components. ESD (electrostatic discharge) - Static electricity, which can cause damage to chips and destroy motherboards. Base Stations - Fixed transceiver and antenna used to create one cell within a cellular network. Geotracking - A mobile device routinely reports its position to apple, google or Microsoft at least twice a day, which makes it possible for these companies to track your device's whereabouts. Tethering - To connect a mobile device with a cellular connection to the internet to a computer so that the computer can access the internet by way of the mobile device. Firmware - Software that is permanently stored in a chip. The BIOS on a motherboard is an example. Spacers - Round plastic or melt pegs that separate the motherboard from the case, so that components on the back of the motherboard do not touch the case. Optical Sound Port - small rectangular port with two holes on the side Primary Storage - The area in a computer in which data is stored for quick access by the computer's processor. Sometimes known as RAM. Header - The portion of a data block, cell, frame, or packet that precedes the text field or payload and provides information such as the source address and destination address. Identifies Pin 1 - A triangle. Mustimeter - Device used to measure the various attributes of an electrical circuit. The most common measurements are voltage, current and resistance. Touch Pad - Common pointing device on a laptop computer. Solid State Drive - An electronic device with no moving parts. A storage device that uses memory chips to store data instead of spinning disks. Steps to disassemble a PC - 1. Remove side cover(s) 2. Remove expansion card(s) 3. Remove P1 & P4 4. Remove Front Panel connections 5. Remove SATA / PATA cables 6. Remove PSU 7. Remove Motherboard 8. Remove 5.25", 3.5", and 2.5" devices FRU (field replaceable unit) - A circuit board, part or assembly that can be quickly and easily removed from a computer or other piece of electronic equipment, and replaced by the user or a technician without having to send the entire product or system to a repair facility. POST Card - A test card installed in a slot on the motherboard or plugged in to a USB port that is used to help discover and report computer errors and conflicts that occur when a computer is first turned on and before the OS is launched. Front Panel Header - A group of pins on a motherboard that connect to wires that are connected to the front panel of the computer case. Video Ports - VGA (external monitor), HDMI (high end TVs), S-Video (video in, video out), DVI (mini, macro) Working Inside a Laptop - Always check for service manuals online, check and see if there is a warranty, check for YouTube videos that explain the proper steps to disassembly as almost all laptops are different, create diagrams of the laptop as you're taking it apart showing where the proper screws go. Reassemble in the backwards order you took it apart.
