Health Education Standards Traditional health education focused on the acquisition of knowledge. Today, health education helps young people learn and practice needed skills. The publication of the seven National Health Education Standards in 1995 marked an important change in the focus of school health education. The National Health Education Standards were revised and updated in 2005 to include eight standards. 1. They reflect a range of important personal and social skills young people can apply in the context of priority content areas. 2. This change reflects the move from information-based to skills-based health education. 3. The change to increase healthy behaviors is supported by the CDC, parents, teachers, administrators, and community members. 4. A skills-based approach helps students make sense of the enormous amount of new information generated each year. 5. Students take an active role with this approach versus a passive role when just acquiring information. 6. Many state and local agencies use the National Health Education Standards as a basis for creating their own standards. 7. The personal and social skills reflected in the standards include: a. Core concepts b. Analyzing internal and external influences c. Accessing information, products, and services d. Interpersonal communication e. Decision making f. Goal setting g. Self-management h.
