An experiment conducted by brad peirson in the materials science and engineering lab at grand valley state university under the supervision of dr. P.n. Anyalebechi. The purpose of the lab was to determine the heat treatment conditions applied to three 1018 steel specimens based on their hardness. The specimens were all cut from the same bar and had similar hardness prior to heat treatment. After initial hardness testing, they were placed in the same furnace and subjected to different cooling methods: quenching in water, air cooling, and furnace cooling. The results showed significant differences in hardness levels, suggesting that the air-cooled sample was normalized, and the furnace-cooled sample was annealed.
