The controversy over authority, was the key reason why Islam was divided into the Shia and Sunni. The Sunni take up about 90% of the world’s Muslim population while the Shia uphold the remaining share. In simple perception the difference is quite inconsiderable. For one to be appointed as an Imam, possession of qualities such as infallibility, and display and approval of being a prodigy in Islamic sciences and teachings as well as statutes and commandments of Islam. In consistent with the mentioned controversy, theologians and thinkers in early Islamic era established approaches through which an individual should exhibit to assume such a position.
