Geography 1011: Landscapes and Water Fall 2022 Homework #2 Due date and instructions: This homework is due by 5 pm Mountain time on Friday, October 14th. Submit your homework as a pdf or a word document (we cannot grade it if it the homework is a pages file or any other file) to receive credit for the homework. Make sure to write your answers in your own words. Write short answers to the questions in your own words. You should draw on both the readings from the textbook (see updated schedule for page numbers) and lecture materials for your answers. Questions: 1) For this question, please refer to the image at right. In humid tropical climates, where much rain falls and temperatures are high, chemical weathering causes thick soils to develop rapidly. Dense vegetation in humid, warm climates continuously adds organic material to the topsoil. However, heavy rains – common in tropical climates – cause a lot of leaching of that topsoil. As a result, the A horizon in tropical climates is typically thin, as shown in the figure. What is required for chemical weathering to occur? In which climate is the rate of chemical weathering the greatest? What soil horizon would collect the material leached from the A horizon? In what environment (tropical, temperate, or desert/arctic) would physical weathering dominate? Global warming is expected to increase temperature and precipitation in the Arctic. In your own words, describe how and why the thicknesses of the A and B soil horizons in the Arctic may change in response to long-term global warming. 2) What type of chemical weathering is depicted in panel A? Give an example of a mineral that undergoes this weathering process. A
