Ethical egoism argues that any action should be done solely to achieve individual benefits. Pursuing their own self-interest, and no one has any obligation to promote anyone else’s interests. Forms of ethical egoism: Individual, Personal, Universal. Difference between Long-run self-interest and Short-run self-interest → Long-term self-interest means the pursuit of outcomes that will benefit the self in the long run. → Short-term self-interest means sacrificing today negatively by many so the few can enrich themselves. FOR EXAMPLE An investor is aware of an opportunity to invest in a manufacture products using environmental damaging process. → The factory causes pollution in the surrounding area → Do harm to environment and health of local community. ⇒Minh is practicing ethical egoism by prioritizing his own financial gain over having a negative impact to the environment. UNIVERSAL ETHICAL EGOISM 03 Universal Ethical Egoism “All people should do what is in their own interests.” - This principle is universalizable. - Universal Ethical Egoism is stronger because it includes everyone, not just myself.
