This month will close with a special visitor that will help close our activities of the month and introduce our next topic for De- cember. Maya Ange- lou, a famous African- American poet, will be joining us on Novem- ber 30th. Parents and other family members are wel- come to attend this special event! The assembly will be held three times that day, at 10:00-10:45, 11:00—11:45, and 1:00 to 1:45 in the main auditorium. This month the 8th grade English students will be very busy! We will be working on our very own poetry notebooks, which will be available to take home at the end of the month for you to enjoy. We will be putting a lot of hard work and dedication into these notebooks, so please take the time to share these with your family. Each student will be respon- sible for creating one poem from each style that we discuss in class. The notebooks will also include five free choices of poems to add to his or her portfolios. This will be a fun and exciting opportunity to learn about all of the different styles of writing, and perhaps your child will discover a love of poetry they never knew! Since we will have cre- ated our own poetry note- books, next month we will fo- cus on famous American Po- ets like Emily Dickinson , Ed- gar Allen Poe, Walt Whitman and many more. Now that we have a better understanding of what it takes to write poems, we are ready to discover what it takes to be a real poet! We will be analyzing and performing at least one poem from each of the 6 poets I have planned. Goals this Month Special Visitor This Month!
