Hypothesis Testing: Sierra College Stats & Campaign Finance Reform - Prof. James Sullivan, Study notes of Statistics

An explanation of hypothesis testing techniques for population proportions, using a case study of a claim that 20% of sierra college statistics students attend school part-time and an example of testing whether more than two-thirds of americans favor campaign finance reform. The steps of hypothesis testing, the calculation of the test statistic and p-value, and the interpretation of the results.

Download Hypothesis Testing: Sierra College Stats & Campaign Finance Reform - Prof. James Sullivan and more Study notes Statistics in PDF only on Docsity! 1 Hypothesis Testing If you (or someone) claims to know the value of a particular population parameter, you can test your (or their) claim by using hypothesis testing techniques. Example I think that 20% of Sierra College statistics students attend school part-time. Use our student survey data and a 5% level of significance to test my claim. Solution Students who are enrolled in fewer than 12 units are classified as “part-time” students. Of the 44 students in our survey, 8 are enrolled in fewer than 12 units. 2 Claim: p = 20% Opposite: p ≠ 20% H0: p = 20% “My claim is valid” H1: p ≠ 20% “My claim is not valid” Let α = 5% Standard level of significance is 5% Test Statistic for one population proportion 1-PropZTest… ˆ (1 ) p pz p p n − = − Since p-value = 76.3% > 5% = α, we fail to reject Ho. Therefore, we fail to reject my claim that 20% of Sierra College statistics students attend school part-time. Hence, my claim is valid.
