Qe yee eee South Industrial Factories There were few mills and factories built in the south because the south believed in agriculture while the north believed in manufacturing. And also the south put all their money into farms and slaves and had little money and interest in factories. The North had five times the number of factories as the South, and over ten times the number of factory workers. In addition, most of the nation's skilled workers were in the North. The labor forces in the South and North were fundamentally different, as well because of slavery in the South. States in the South The Southern United States is a geographic and cultural region of the United States of America. It is between the Atlantic Ocean and the Western United States, with the Midwestern and Northeastern United States to its north and the Gulf of Mexico and Mexico to its south. Around 1800 there was around 15 states in the south (Virginia, Delaware, Maryland, Georgia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Kentucky, Tennessee, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi, Missouri, Arkansas, Louisiana and Texas). The Paleo-Indians were the first peoples to inhabit the Americas and what would become the Southern United States. Slavey Slavery and enslavement are both the state and the condition of being a slave, who is someone forbidden to quit serving an enslaver, and is treated by the enslaver as property Slavery typically involves slaves being made to perform some form of work while also having their location dictated by the enslaver. Because the climate and soil of the South were suitable for the cultivation of commercial (plantation) crops such as tobacco, rice, and indigo, slavery developed in the southern colonies on a much larger scale than in the northern colonies. Besides planting and harvesting, there were numerous other types of labor required on plantations and farms. Enslaved people had to clear new land, dig ditches, cut and haul wood, slaughter livestock, and make repairs to buildings and tools. Since slavery was so strong in the South they used up most of there money on land and enslaved people so they did not have many factories like the North did. Eli Whitney Eli Whitney Jr. was an American inventor, widely known for inventing the cotton gin, one of the key inventions of the Industrial Revolution that shaped the economy of the Antebellum South. In popular mythology, Eli Whitney has been deemed the "father of American technology," for two innovations: the cotton gin, and the idea of using interchangeable parts. kad BP) hee CREMP ERE EE NE OP gro TS ieae 2
