COMPUTER NETWORKING LEADERSHIP IN IT INDUSTRY CHAPTER ONE INTRODUCTION Student Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), is a foundation for practical excellence is a scheme put in place to help students to gain more experience in the things they were being taught in school during their penultimate level. It makes them familiar with the industry and gives a better understanding of everything they have learned back in school. It was aimed at exposing the 400 level students to practice activities in the major disciplines, electrical engineering, computer engineering, information, and media technology outside the university environment, so they will be able to gain much more experience and develop innovative and creative abilities necessary in today’s competitive IT world. This report contains a summary of the skills acquired and experience gained during this scheme; from OCTOBER 2019 to MARCH 2020 in IGS Innovative Global Solutions LTD in Wuse 2 FCT, Abuja. HISTORY OF SIWES At the early stages of the development of education in Nigeria, there was a problem of the gap between theory and practical skills of students. Therefore, there was a need to allow students to get real work experience. The program was created to give students experience in addition to theoretical learning. The industrial training policy was introduced by the Federal Government of Nigeria in 1973. This project was necessary to improve the practical skills of students. SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition of graduation. The program is working with such disciplines as engineering, medical science, natural science, technology, agriculture, education, environmental, among others. Participation in SIWES has become a necessary pre-condition for the award of Diploma and Degree certificates in specific disciplines in most institutions of higher learning in the country, per the education policy of the government. CONSULTANCY We provide technology consulting, innovative and leading-edge solutions to our clients. 11 CHAPTER THREE DEPARTMENTS OF THE ORGNISATION NETWORKING DEPARTMENT My Internship at IGS Innovative Global Solution Ltd exposed me to the technical aspect of industrial processes in Nigeria. The following activities and tasks were carried out by me; during the period of my attachment in the IGS Innovative Global Solution Ltd, Abuja. The Networking department is tasked with handling the networking solutions that are actively sought by industry, government, and military. The tasks range from simple network testing and troubleshooting to backend research and development of network protocols. I gained lots of experience from the different units of the department by learning from the staff, asking questions and also participating in some projects. SOFTWARE DEVELOPMENT DEPARTMENT Software department is tasked with handling the developing and installing integrated open systems software and proprietary hardware & applications, aimed at providing a range of convergent services and products are actively sought by industry, government, and military. CUSTOMER CARE DEPARTMENT Customer care department help customers with complaints and questions, give customers information about products and services, take orders, and process returns. By helping customers 12 Mobile Applications and Device Platforms There are two dominant platforms in the modern smartphone market. One is the iOS platform from Apple Inc. The iOS platform is the operating system that powers Apple's popular line of iPhone smartphones. The second is Android from Google. The Android operating system is used not only by Google devices but also by many other OEMs to build their own smartphones and other smart devices. Although there are some similarities between these two platforms when building applications, developing for iOS vs. developing for Android involves using different software development kits (SDKs) and different development toolchain. While Apple uses iOS exclusively for its own devices, Google makes Android available to other companies provided they meet specific requirements such as including certain Google applications on the devices they ship. Developers can build apps for hundreds of millions of devices by targeting both of these platforms. COMPUTER NETWORKING Computer network is a group of computers that use a set of common communication protocols over digital interconnections for the purpose of sharing resources located on or provided by the network nodes. The interconnections between nodes are formed from a broad spectrum of telecommunication network technologies, based on physically wired, optical, and wireless radio- frequency methods that may be arranged in a variety of network topologies. The nodes of a computer network may include personal computers, servers, networking hardware, or other specialized or general-purpose hosts. They are identified by hostnames and network addresses. Hostnames serve as memorable labels for the nodes, rarely changed after initial assignment. Network addresses serve for locating and identifying the nodes by communication protocols such as the Internet Protocol. Computer networks may be classified by many criteria, for example, the transmission medium used to carry signals, bandwidth, communications protocols to organize network traffic, the network size, the topology, traffic control mechanism, and organizational intent. 15 Computer networks support many applications and services, such as access to the World Wide Web, digital video, digital audio, shared use of application and storage servers, printers, and fax machines, and use of email and instant messaging applications. LEADERSHIP IN IT INDUSTRY Leadership in the IT industry is a crucial ingredient to success. That’s why it’s a buzzword, not just in IT industry but in every industry. From education to sales and IT, everyone praises leadership as an admirable skill. Leadership in the IT industry is influencing or affecting others to go to a certain direction in the industry which is considered important. Leadership is about causing movement from one place to another which is considered better. What is Good Leadership A good leader is a person who displays great character. They are trustworthy, kind, honest, dedicated, hardworking, and uphold the morals of the business they represent. This person has integrity, a sound knowledge of what it means to be responsible, and a drive to do more. A leader knows how to demand respect, while showing they that know how to give it, equally. They have a passion for the type of work they are conducting, becoming enthusiastic over their accomplishments as well as the accomplishments of those around them. These individuals exude confidence in themselves and their company; they are supportive and engaged with the advancement of their business. Good leaders are aware of their purpose and maintain poise, composure and a level head when things become chaotic, often keeping the main objective in focus even when the stress feels insurmountable. These people are the backbone of a company, always pushing forward towards excellence, and proving they are reliable. Characteristics of Effective IT Leadership Leadership Thrives in Uncertainty Leadership is a necessary skill during uncertainties because it serves as the light on the dark path. Leadership not only “tells” the way, it “lives out” and “shows the way”. In times of pandemic, most industries have experienced great uncertainty and most has looked upon the IT industry for solutions. True leaders in the IT industry recognized the realities of uncertainty and acts towards 16 making solutions. Because of the pandemic, many companies in the IT industry have experienced exponential demands. Leadership Knows Strengths and Weaknesses Leadership does not automatically spell success. A leader is not the only person performing well, with the best education, or the person who takes over projects. A leader is a pioneer who has the ability to see both the strengths and weaknesses of the team and its members, but also the strengths and weaknesses of him/herself. This person(s) possesses the unique ability to look within and feel uncomfortable with complacency. 17
