Introduction Technology has been circulated all over the world. It includes machines like computers and other gadgets. The common example of this is the smart phones. Anyone can buy a brand new phone or a second hand because of different kinds of brands that cost cheaper and affordable than others. “Think before you click”. People nowadays are all digital native. Social media Network plays an important role in everyone’s life. Using different websites like Facebook, YouTube, Instagram, Wattpad and Twitter, people can gain profit, additional information, pass time, socialize with other people with similar interest and background and express themselves through posting and blogging. With the help of social media, there will be endless of possibilities for every individual to connect and communicate with other people globally. Unlike in the past, communication nowadays revolves around the social media world wherein in just one click, all of your friends and all other netizens will get notified about it because of the internet connection everyone has. 7 Scope and Delimitation of the Study The researchers aimed to determine what are the influences of social media on Senior High School students towards learning during the School Year 2017- 2018. They also identified the target people who answered the prepared questionnaire. It involved 18 students from the Senior High School Department of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School. The Descriptive Survey Method would be used while conducting the said activity. The respondents answered the questions given by the researchers. The influence of social media on Senior High School students towards learning were answered through a questionnaire made by the researchers. Significance of the Study The researchers aimed to widen their knowledge with regards to the influence of social media on the perceptions of students towards learning. This research study benefited the following: Students. This research material was intended for those students who use social media as a pass time, for school purposes and other use of different websites. And they would understand if social media was really a helpful tool for them or not. Parents. This research study helped the parents to track the usage of their child with regards to social media. Teachers. This research was designed for the current teacher of the Senior High School Department to know if the integration of social media in their teaching strategies is helpful on the Senior High School students’ academic performance or the traditional teaching is better. Future Researchers. This research aimed to help the future researchers to explore more about this research. 10 CHAPTER II REVIEW OF THE RELATED LITERATURE This chapter discussed the related literature, studies, theories and the definition of terms about the influence of social media on the Senior High School students towards learning that will support the entire research study. Related literature Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Social Media Social Networking started as a place to connect with your friends in an easy and convenient way (Jackson, 2009). Social networking sites allow the individual in the family to share their daily lives in a sure but public forums. Family members are able to organize events. Relatives abroad can communicate and share things every time in their own free time despite the fact that their geographical distance. A Social networking site can be a good way to make connections with people with similar interest and goals (Steve, 2008). Communication is one of the main things why there are social networking sites, to gather information and to broaden their knowledge. Since social networking sites is a huge place to gather information to what is trending nowadays. (Green, 2008). Other things in the social media are a great chance to gather ideas since those articles are specified (Green, 2008). In a survey conducted by Bagget and Williams (2012), students agree that social media is a means to connect between individuals and is used as means to share common interests. Media represents useful tools for communication and education, and provides an opportunity for networking in any profession. With time constraints and demanding 11 class schedules, social media helps students to multitask because they do not want to spend time creating multiple messages. Victoria Rideout states that, among the younger generation, the time they spend on social media, what she calls ‘entertainment media’ is “more than twice the average amount of time spent in school each year”. Using social media, students can multi-task between all the different media they use. For example, they can be listening to music, sending a tweet and also posting on Facebook. Rideout said that since social media is seven days a week, unlike school or having a full-time job, over the years the amount of time one could spend over the internet “has exploded” (Rideout, 2012, p. 5) Related Studies Advantages and Disadvantages of Using Social Media A review study from Nottingham Trent University (2017) looked back over earlier research on the psychological characteristics, personality and social media use. The authors conclude that “it may be plausible to speak specifically of ‘Facebook Addiction Disorder’…because addiction criteria, such as neglect of personal life, mental preoccupation, escapism, mood modifying experiences, tolerance and concealing the addictive behavior, appear to be present in some people who use [social networks] excessively.” According to Walton (2017), there are five factors that affect our mental health. One study a few years ago found that Facebook use was linked to both less moment-to- moment happiness and less life satisfaction. Another study looked at how we make comparisons to others posts, in “upward” or “downward” directions that can lead to depressive symptoms. Followed by the study that shows social media use triggers feelings of jealousy. Part of the unhealthy cycle is that we keep coming back to social 12 Definition of Terms Facebook depression defined as emotional disturbance that develops when preteens and teens spend a great deal of time on social media sites is now a very real malady. Social Media Marketing refers to the process of gaining traffic or attention through social media site. Social Networking started as a place to connect with your friends in an easy and convenient way Social networking sites allow the individual in the family to share their daily lives in a sure but public forums. Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB) This theory attempts to predict deliberate behavior, because behavior has the potential to be deliberate and planned. 15 CHAPTER III METHODS OF RESEARCH This chapter discussed the methods and techniques, population of the study, research instruments, data gathering procedure, and data processing and statistical treatment. Methods and Techniques Descriptive survey method was used while conducting this research as the research suggest. Descriptive research describes what is. It involves the description, recording, analysis, and interpretation of the present nature, composition or processes of phenomena. The focus is on prevailing conditions, or how a person, group, or thing behaves or functions in the present. It often involves some type of comparison or contrast (Manuel and Medel, p. 25). This method is the most appropriate to use to analyze, describe and understand the influence of social media on the perceptions of the student towards learning. Three main purposes of research are to describe, explain, and validate findings. Description emerges following creative exploration, and serves to organize the findings in order to fit them with explanations, and then test or validate those explanations (Krathwohl, 1993). Many research studies call for the description of natural or man-made phenomena such as their form, structure, activity, and change over time, relation to other phenomena, and so on. 16 Population of the Study Table 1 shows the respondents coming from the Senior High Department of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School composed of 18 students. Table 1 Population Sample Respondents Total With honors 9 Non-honors 9 Total 18 Primary sources of data were obtained from Senior High students of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School during the School Year 2017-2018, which were involved in the study. Purposive or judgmental sampling method was used in this study. Research Instruments To gather all the data needed from the respondents, the researchers constructed a checklist method that was approved by the OIC/Head Teacher III of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School. The first part was intended to know the student’s profile. The second part was the checklist survey questionnaire that answers the questions of the researchers. Data Gathering Procedure The researchers gave a letter request to their consultant, noted and approved by the subject teacher for the students of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School to be surveyed. The researcher will personally deliver the letter request to all concerned for the conduct of survey. In survey method research, participants answer questions administered 17 Presentation of Results Table 2 Students who have social media account/s With Honors Non-Honors Total Facebook 9 9 18 Youtube 5 7 12 Messenger 9 9 18 Wattpad 6 2 8 Instagram 5 4 9 Gmail 1 0 1 Twitter 2 1 3 Google 1 0 1 Pixiv 0 1 1 Among the 18 respondents surveyed of the 60 Senior High School students, 18 of them has an account on Facebook which also tallied with the number of respondents with Messenger account. Table 6 Things that students do With Honors Non-Honors 22 CHAPTER V 25 SUMMARY OF FINDINGS, CONCLUSION, AND RECOMMENDATIONS This chapter contains the salient results of the study, generalizations inferred from the findings for each research problem listed in the first chapter, and recommendations based on the significant findings and conclusions of the study. Summary of findings The following were the findings of the study based on the data collected: 1. Results of the study showed that all of the respondents have a social media account of Facebook and Messenger. And the lowest number of person who used these 3 social media accounts was Google, Gmail and Pixiv 1 person for each account. 2. The results of the study showed that social media was used for communication purposes. 16 respondents answered chatting; it is either with family, with friends and other people. While 14 respondents answered that they are using social media to communicate with their teachers and fellow students. But only one answered that he/she used social media to make his/her assignment. 3. According to the results, the study showed that most of the students only talk with their classmates and sometimes they do their homework when the teacher leaved them. 4. The result of the study showed that the students used social media for entertainment, information and educational purposes. The results were high and half of them used it all. It means that they can be entertained while they are using their social media for educational purposes. 26 5. The results showed that mostly, with honors students used social media that they cannot even last a day without using it and they used it for their grades to increase while students with non-honors answered that social media has been a hindrance for them to study better. Conclusion Based on the findings, the following conclusions were drawn: Social media has been used by the students for entertainment and for educational purposes. There is a difference between the achievers and non-achievers when it comes to the influence of social media especially when it comes to balancing their social media usage and their academic performances. The use of social media is advantageous to students based on Table 8 as also proven in the study of Ellefsen et al., 2016 that Social media has its potential as an educational tool that could improve student motivation and in-class participation levels. Recommendations As the researcher observed, teachers let students used social media in their time because it is where they can find the files and the information that they need for their subjects but some of the students didn’t have internet connection, it is recommended that they must have an internet connection for all of the students that can only be used for academic purposes. The non-achievers should develop their knowledge on using social media because it can help them as they go on through the process of learning. 27 Udorie, J.E. (2015). Mendoza Sr. High School Malamig, Bustos, Bulacan Dear Mrs. Canoza: We, Grade 11 students of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School is currently working on the research entitled “Influence of Social Media Towards Senior High School Learning” as part of our Practical Research I. We would like to ask for your permission to conduct a data gathering procedure for Senior High School students about the said topic. Sincerely, Eliezha Belle Cruz Jhon Webb Bernardo Micaella Francisco Richzon Arroyo Peter Ivan Barsaga Renz Jerome Canoza Joan Abelgos Noted By: Mrs. Ma. Teresita Calapis Senior High School Teacher “APPENDIX C” 32 JOURNAL Before doing the actual paper in Practical Research 1, Mrs. Ma. Teresita G. Calapis told us to do the reporting before proceeding to the actual research process to ensure the quality of ideas we were going to present. On the reporting, we discuss about our research problem, specific problem, the strength and weaknesses of our group, and the challenges we might encounter while doing the paper. We present it using a visual aid and do the peer editing. The other groups also present their own and we also do the same way. After all the groups finished the reporting, we are on our way on making the Chapter 1 of our research paper. We read related literatures to define Social Networking as a part of our Introduction. It gives us a hard time finding related literatures because we have no library in the school. But then, thanks with the help of the Internet, it helps us to gather relevant related literatures, studies and theories. Upon collecting related literatures, studies and theories, we do the referencing using the APA (American Psychological Association) formatting. It was a sunny day when Jhon Webb, Micaella and I did the Chapter 1 of research. This chapter includes the introduction, statement of the problem, significance of the study and scope and delimitation. We also do it in our house because we need to pass it to Ma’am Calapis as soon as possible. For the review of the related literature to be accomplished, I, as a leader asked my members to search for the related literature, studies and theories about our topic. For the chapter 2 we’ve read the related literature from the internet because we don’t have a library here in our school. We had a struggle finding 35 and choosing the right literature to be used. We also discussed the methods and what kind of questionnaire we are going to use in chapter 3. Last November we did the draft of our research problem including the general and specific problem. We also made the statement of the problem. After discussing on the Chapter I, we proceed on the Chapter II Review of the Related Literatures which discussed the related literatures, studies, theories and the definition of terms. We worked on this until the month of January. We also prepare for the first defense that month which critiqued by the Junior High School teachers in Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School. January 2018 is our first defense. After that, the panels helped us to improve the content of our research. For finding the answers to our questions in chapter 1, we gave a checklist questionnaire to the Senior High Students of Dr. Pablito V. Mendoza Sr. High School. After the first defense we started to work on Chapter III, the Methods of Research, which includes the methods and techniques, population of the study, research instruments, data gathering procedure and the data processing and statistical treatment. On the first day of our Practical Research 1, I do not know what is the meaning and purpose why this subject is involve in the GAS Strand, but after our Practical Research teacher Mrs. Ma. Teresita G. Calapis explain it to us, I know now that doing a research is important by doing a research to the things you want to know. In the fast few days after the discussion, our group tried to formulate problems that can be a good topic on our research paper and we experience to be a good researcher. 36 My team leader assigned me to photocopy the survey form that is given to our respondents. Every people have a different views and opinions, so the answers in the survey form may be different from each other. On our first ever proposal defense, we feel so nervous because we didn’t know what are the questions that the panel will give to us and my heart beat so fast like “TUGTUGTUGTUGTUG”! But when the defense is done, my nervousness fades away While doing a research, it takes a process we should follow in order to make the paper we are doing clear to understand. While doing it, we always give time to finish it even after the school hours. Being removed to the group is the one which I experienced because that time I’m not helping them. But now, on our final defense I will join the group for the second time and I promise that I will now help my groupmates to finish and present it to our very best. We are preparing for our Final Defense and we are waiting for this for a long time and finally we will now be able to present it. My team leader assigned me to look for some related literature, studies and theories about social media. At first, I find it difficult to get the information that I need. So I asked my co-members on how to get the RRL and they told me to go to google scholar because there are many related literatures that I can get. I also helped my members in doing the referencing and citations using APA style. I suffered a lot in doing this because I’m not familiar with it but I still coped up with them. I helped in doing the gathering of data and in interpretation. In this subject, I learned how to be responsible. Like in the defense, you should fight on what you believe as long as it is appropriate so that the panel will believe you on what you are saying and for your paper to be approved. 37 Curriculum Vitae PERSONAL BACKGROUND Name: Micaella M.
