ILAS301-2: Instructions for the Reading Activity Assignment As you observe in your middle school and high school, try to find out if there is a reading specialist available for you to interview. Ask your cooperating teachers about the reading abilities of their students, and observe what kinds of teaching techniques are used to promote comprehension and communication. This assignment is aligned with Illinois’ Professional Teaching Standards 1, 2, 3, and 7. Step 1- Doing the Research Connect to the Meeting the Secondary Reading Challenge website (http://www.sarasota.k12.fl.us/sarasota/mainmenu.htm); locate the Teaching Reading section. Find the link called “The Reading Process.” Once you have read through this material, answer the following questions in a couple of paragraphs. Use the Research section of the template file (“ILAS301-2-LoginID”) to record your responses. a) The authors of this site explain five generalizations regarding the teaching of reading. Which of these generalizations are surprising to you as a pre-service teacher? Which of these generalizations support your own ideas/assumptions about reading? b) Based on your reading of the section titled “The Role of the Secondary Classroom Teacher” and your own observations, which “teaching of reading” practices do you think have the most potential for success with students? Why do you think so? Now return to the Meeting the Secondary Reading Challenge website; locate the Interdisciplinary Reading in the Content Areas section. Find the link called “Reading Strategies That Assist Content Area Reading.” c) Make a list of reading strategies that you would like to implement in your own classroom.
