The Association of American Publishers produced the ad. 2. To whom is the ad targeted? (gender, age, wealth, class, race, location - urban vs. rural, and any other way to classify and narrow the audience down) The ad is targeted towards young students, particularly elementary-age Chicago Cubs fans, to help encourage them to read. 3. What are the clues in each ad that reveal whom the ad is trying to reach? (These should be SPECIFIC references to DETAILS in the ad - font, color, foreground, background, emphasis, language, images, etc). In the advertisement, famous Chicago Cubs player Sammy Sosa is “caught reading” a Dr. Seuss book. As Dr. Seuss' books are primarily read by young children, the fact that the fully grown baseball player is reading one creates an amusing contrast that shows that the target audience must be of a far younger age group. With the combination of a player who many children certainly considered heroic and a famous children’s story, it is clear that the advertiser was trying to convince kids that it is GOOD to get “caught reading”. 4. What/which values, beliefs, needs, or background information of the intended audience do the specific details you mentioned in #3 appeal to? The advertisement of a famous athlete being “caught reading” is meant to appeal to child viewers who value popularity and being interesting. At a young age, children place high value in seeming “cool”, and by associating the popular Sammy Sosa with reading, the advertisement shows that READING must be cool as well! 5. In what section of a newspaper or magazine might you find this ad? (news, business, feature, sports, travel, other) and WHY? This advertisement would likely be found in a children’s magazine, or at least a section of a magazine that focuses on some interest catering towards young audiences. Children are the intended audience of this message, not adult sports enthusiasts, as they require no persuasion to read books. Therefore, despite the baseball player, the advertisement would not be in a strictly sports section, but perhaps a sports section for kids. OAKLEAF VILLAGE: 1. Who produced the ad? The Oakleaf Village of Lexington, an assisted living facility in South Carolina. 2. To whom is the ad targeted? (gender, age, wealth, class, race, location - urban vs. rural, and any other way to classify and narrow the audience down) To senior South Carolina citizens who require assisted living, as well as their family. 3. What are the clues in each ad that reveal whom the ad is trying to reach? (These should be SPECIFIC references to DETAILS in the ad - font, color, foreground, background, emphasis, language, images, etc). The ad depicts an elderly woman smiling with two children, who the reader presumes are related to her. The description uses the repetition of “smiling” and all individuals in the photograph are smiling as well, emphasizing the importance of their happiness. 4. What/which values, beliefs, needs, or background information of the intended audience do the specific details you mentioned in #3 appeal to? These specific details appeal to the family-oriented nature of many senior citizens, who value close familial ties and their relationships with relatives. As a result, the advertisement depicts an elderly woman with her presumed family members and make special mention of the residents’ loved ones, so they can show their prospective residents that family is of great importance to the assisted living facility. In addition, the emphasis on “smiling” shows that the nursing home cares deeply about the happiness of its residents, and that appeals to family members of elderly people who are looking to make the best decision for their loved ones. 5. In what section of a newspaper or magazine might you find this ad? (news, business, feature, sports, travel, other) and WHY? A healthcare section, suburban magazines, family life magazines, etc. As this advertisement appeals to elderly people and their family members, this advertisement would be most effective in section that are family-focused or ones that are commonly read by elderly people. SANDS RESORTS: CHILL-OUT IN MYRTLE BEACH 1. Who produced the ad? The ad was produced by Sands Resorts, a collection of beach and golf resorts. 2. To whom is the ad targeted? (gender, age, wealth, class, race, location - urban vs. rural, and any other way to classify and narrow the audience down)
