CATALOG DESCRIPTION Continuation of SPAN 102. Further refinement of basic language skills, including vocabulary. Increased control over structures and idioms in written and oral expression. Reading about literature, culture and society (3 hours lecture). STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES The student learning outcomes for the course are: 1. Use appropriate pronunciation, structure and vocabulary to communicate orally with speakers of Spanish. 2. Read and understand authentic documents in Spanish (menus, recipes, itineraries, articles, poetry) for cultural information. 3. Compose dialogues and do research on some aspect of Hispanic culture or history and present it orally. 4. Analyze oral, written and visual sources of information about Hispanic culture and compare and contrast with what students know of their own culture. 5. Write descriptions, letters, diaries, showing knowledge of vocabulary, appropriate structures and knowledge of Hispanic culture. 6. Use Spanish to communicate personal information and experience and narrate past events and future aspirations. . 2 COURSE CONTENT Concepts or Topics 1. Food, nutrition, cooking 2. Health, doctors, hospitals 3. Travel and vacations 4. Changes in society 5. Culture and art Skills or competencies 1. Ordering food in restaurants, writing recipes 2. Communicating with doctors, describing symptoms, parts of the body 3. Checking into a hotel, creating an itinerary 4. Talking about social conditions, demographics, the future, art and culture COURSE TASKS During each lesson we will have 10-25 point quizzes based on the vocabulary, grammar, readings. Students will memorize a passage of 8 lines from Martí's Versos Sencillos and write and present in Spanish a report on some aspect of Hispanic culture or history. There will be a description of a beloved dead person for the Day of the Dead ceremony at the beginning of November, and a 100-point final covering all the material we have studied. In addition, homework will be worth 25 points, based on the percentage completed of all the possible homework.
