COUN 528 Handout #6 SELF-ASSESSMENT SCALE: WHAT KIND OF GROUP MEMBER AM I?* I hope you have had some form of experience as a group member. If not, you can rate yourself on the following self-inventory in terms of your behavior in the class you're now in. These items refer to the role of group members, and they are geared to help you determine your strengths and weaknesses as a group member. I believe that one of the best ways of preparing for effective leadership is to first become an effective member. After this inventory is completed, the class can break up into small groups; the groups can be composed of people who know each other best. Members of these groups should then assess one another's self-ratings. Discuss how you can become a better group member. Rate yourself on a scale of from 1 to 5, with 1 being "almost never true of you" to 5 being "almost always true of you" as a group member. 1. I am willing to raise personal concerns and explore them in the group. 2. I am an active and contributing group member. 3. I listen attentively to others, and I respond to them. 4. I share my perceptions of others by giving them feedback of how I see them and how I am affected by them. 5. I confront others with care, yet I do so directly. 6. I'm willing to formulate specific goals and contracts when I am a member of a group. 7. I'm willing to openly express my feelings about and reactions to what is occurring within the group. 8. I serve as a positive model to others in the group. 9. I am active in taking steps to create and maintain trust in the group. 10. As a group participant, I give direct feedback to others, and I am open to considering feedback from them. 11. I show that I am willing to put insights into action by practicing what I learn in the group in my life between sessions. 12. I prepare myself for group by thinking about what I want from the sessions. 13. I am willing to get involved in role-playing activities. 14. I express persistent feelings I am having in group. 15. I'm able to provide support to others in the group at appropriate times. * Corey, G. (1981). Manual for theory and practice of group counseling. Monterey, CA Brooks/Cole
