AN INTRODUCTION TO PROFESSIONALISM Professionalism • Considered as behaving within the appropriate manner and adhering to accepted concepts and practices. • Competence in IT, knowledge, and knowledge, and various skills to bring about reputation, and ethical behavior and add value to any company. • Offers a platform for ethical trade. • Greatly improves profits, production, and high market value within an organization. • Greatly benefits those who abide by it and impacts contemporary society in a good manner. Why IT professionalism and reliability is needed and why could it be important? • To enhance the expansion and add value to the business. • Provide better services to clients. • Improves trust with employers and employees in an organization. • Create company’s own brand value. • Forms the pillar for company’s own eyesight and mission. • Improves customer satisfaction. Profession vs Vocation Profession – a trade, a business, an occupation, or a disciplined group of individuals who adhere to ethical standards and who hold themselves out as, and are accepted by the public as possessing special knowledge and skills in a widely recognized body of learning derived from research, education, and training at a high level, and who are prepared to apply this knowledge and exercise these skills in the interest of others. In the case of a professional, someone who derives their income from their specific knowledge or experience – as opposed to a worker, hobbyist, or amateur without formal education. Recognition of professionals, their duties, and responsibilities: (1) A set of highly developed skills and deep knowledge of the domain. ▪ Such skills must be backed up by a very well- developed knowledge base acquired through long years of formal schooling. (2) Autonomy. ▪ A power play in favor of the provider of the service. ▪ Professionals have autonomy to vary the way the service is provided without asking the receiver for confirmation or consent. (3) Observance of a code of conduct. ▪ 4 types: 1. Professional code. ✓ A set of guidelines provided to the professional by the profession spelling out what a professional ought to do and not do. ✓ Protects both the image of the profession and that of the individual members. 2. Personal code. ✓ Deeply personal and relates specifically to you, the person writing it. ✓ Set of behavior rules you live by, guiding every action you take in life. ✓ Try to set behavior standards for yourself that are realistic and flexible. That way, you can adhere to them. ✓ Can be written down or it can be something you keep in the back of your mind. ✓ Elements: o How you treat yourself o How you treat loved ones o How you treat strangers o Your expected behavior in professional settings o Your expected behavior in intimate settings o How you will react to specific ethical dilemmas o What behaviors from you are unacceptable in any circumstance o How you will hold yourself accountable for different actions 3. Institutional code. ✓ Expresses the institution’s policies, consistent with the public service it affirms in its mission statement. ✓ A code puts the interests of the institution or of any individual and encourages conduct that merits public confidence. 4. Community code. ✓ Outlines our expectations for participants within the community, as well as steps to reporting unacceptable behavior. ✓ Anyone who violates this code may be banned from the community. o Be friendly and patient. o Be welcoming. o Be considerate. o Be respectful. o Be careful in the words that we choose. o Try to understand why we disagree. Code of Ethics of the Filipino Computing and Information Technology Professional Preamble: I will use my special knowledge and skills for the benefit of the public. I will serve employers and clients with integrity, subject to an overriding responsibility to the public interest, and I will strive to enhance the competence and prestige of the professional. By these, I mean: • I will promote public knowledge, understanding, and appreciation of information technology; • I will consider the general welfare and public good in the performance of my work; • I will advertise goods or professional services in a clear and truthful manner; • I will comply and strictly abide by the intellectual property laws, patent laws, and other related laws in respect of information technology; • I will accept full responsibility for the work undertaken and will utilize my skills with competence and professionalism; • I will make truthful statements on my areas of competence as well as the capabilities and qualities of my products and services; • I will not disclose or use any confidential information obtained in the course of professional duties without the consent of the parties concerned, except when required by law; • I will try to attain the highest quality in both the products and services I offer;
