Download Is homework good for students? and more Essays (high school) English in PDF only on Docsity! Students, That is Not a Burden! By Maricar C. Tulio Having a pile of activities, excessive tasks and bunch of quizzes plus loaded with homework are just some of the fears of students. When I was at my younger age, I literary hate homework and assignments. Almost eight hours of attending school, yet, I still have to do things like school paper homework and projects that will be passed on an early deadline? Instead of having much time to get rest or spend the remaining time for other activities, I am obligated to finish the burdensome homework of mine. Presently, should learners express their gratitude towards Senator Grace Poe for submitting a bill for No Homework Policy? PhilStar Global 2019 reported that lawmakers including Senator Grace Poe filed a Senate bill banning teachers to give homework or assignments to students on weekends. The senator authored Senate Bill 966 or the proposed No Homework Law. All primary and secondary schools in the country shall not allow teachers to give any network or assignments to students from Kinder to Grade 12 on weekends. Under the proposed measure, teachers may only assign homework to students on weekends provided that it should be minimal and will not require more than four hours to be completed. Poe stressed that the no homework policy on weekends will be applied to both public and private schools. As Evelina Escudero said that through banning homework, students will have enough time to spend for their whole family bonding instead of facing difficulties against doing school assignments. Understanding the issue is a crucial thing for students who are involved with the proposed policy. Although homework limits the time of students for their daily activities and other matter, homework is a requisite part of learning for it offers various benefits to learners. The Senate Bill 966 suggests that no textbooks shall be brought home to prevent the adverse effects of carrying bag to and from school such as students’ health may be benign. As Pema Tshewang Thimphu 2017 proved the point that carrying heavy school bags will have adverse impact on students’ health as they enter into adulthood. The American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons recommends students to carry only 10 percent of their body weight. For instance, if a child weighs 20 kilogram, then the child should carry only around 2 kilograms of weight. Children use backpacks everyday to get their books back and forth from the school. Many students carry larger school bags with excessive weight. While some parents help carry the school bags, most carry on their own. Doctors say carrying heavy bags cause neck and back pain, shoulder strain, and fatigue amongst others. I think, for my younger self viewpoint and to others it may be a burden. However, currently, I am no longer sure if it is still. Withdrawing homework on the equation is not an answer for any excuses of slothfulness. What is carrying a bag with books, in exchange with the new and extended learning of students? Assigning homework is a practice, preparation, and extension of school learning. In accordance with the Farmington Board of Education 2017, homework is an extension of the classroom and can be an integral part of the student's intellectual development. Homework is school work assigned by the teacher to be accomplished independently by the student outside the classroom. It guides and promotes independent learning and reinforces classroom instruction. Homework affords parents or guardians the opportunity to support the educational experiences of the student. Community-based experiences which provide students with opportunities to apply classroom learning in a real world setting are considered important extensions of learning. How can students make their bag heavy if Alliance of Concerned Teachers 2019 has documented deficits in learning resources which include K to 12 books from Elementary to Senior High School? We can also use technology to make it easier and convenient to students. Homework is waste of time. According to Claire 2015, more homework assignments did not translate into better grades. Next time you hear a child complaining that their science and math homework are waste of time they might have a point. It can affect both students’ physical Students, That is Not a Burden! By Maricar C. Tulio and mental health. According to a study by Stanford University, 56 percent of students considered homework a primary source of stress. Young children spend enough of their day at school. When they come home, they should be free to dump the school bag and get busy doing non academic stuff such as getting a job and starting on something to pursue their career. Maybe homework can cause stress, to be specific, simple stress, compare to heavy errands ahead not just in their academics but also for what the world had set. Homework is not just a provision for the next school classes but also students’ preparations for tertiary level. Obviously, entering college is not a joke. A student should be immune with excessive activities because they will also encounter it when facing college. Actually, primary and secondary tasks were just a less than half of that compared to rigorous works in tertiary. As eloquently said by Alex W. 2017, college classes are definitely harder than high school classes. The topics are more complicated, the learning is more fast-paced, the expectations for self-teaching are much higher and studies like research and feasibility are no longer a piece of cake. Obviously, removing homework in the equation is limiting students’ preparations for college. Aside from the preparation for college, homework is an initial step in preparing for student’s future career. Debbie Regent 2012, who narrated an experience that when she asked a man about his purpose in encouraging his daughter to continue her home assignments. The father answered that homework helps with work ethic and career success. This dad, who sells printing services, went on to tell her about how much work he brings home and how he must respond to client calls and requests at all hours. In the workplaces today, people bring work home and future workers need to be prepared to handle it, he added. Twogetherexpress.com 2017, quoted that the aim of assigning homework is to get learners to practice and strengthen academic skills. By devoting the proper time to homework, students stand a much better chance of making good grades. But homework has other important values. Homework can and should be a character building experience. Handled properly by teachers and parents, homework helps a child develop emotional and behavioural skills needed in the adult world. As a student I do not mind doing homework since it is part of my duties. It is my responsibility to use my time wisely, for me to do tasks that were placed upon my shoulders. Proponents of homework say that it improves student achievement and allows for independent learning of student and life skills through wider and deeper learning at home. To strengthen the point, University of Montereal 2018, cited that homework helps students to develop key skills that they’ll use throughout their lives, such as accountability, autonomy, discipline, time management, self-direction, critical thinking, and independent problem-solving. Moreover, a research by the City University of New York 2013 revealed that learners who engage in self-regulatory processes while completing homework such as goal-setting, time management, and remaining focused are generally more motivated and are higher achievers than those who do not use these processes. On the other side of the issue, Kim P. 2019 spilled that excessive homework can cut down on productive family time. A research from science leardership academy proved that parents are incapable of assisting with the homework. As the stress levels increase, fights begin, which takes away from any quality family time students can spend on school nights. Julia Hood 2017, asserts that homework adds extra pressure and can cause tension in families. It takes away from family time and causes more stress on students and parents. It is almost as if once children start school and the homework starts that it never stops, and that more family time is taken away while more stress is added. I mostly hear from parents who consider homework as a burden. Yet, did not parents ever thought, that this is a way of having time with their children. Being a parent it is their responsibility to guide their children from anything, this includes their academic matter. Research from Johns Hopkins University found that an interactive homework process known as TIPS which stands for Teachers Involve Parents in Schoolwork improves student achievement.
