Fact: A group of mountain climbers were descending in the Himalayas from a height of about 15,000 feet. 2. Fact: The group wanted to get across a pass and was concerned about any delays. 3. Fact: There were three other groups…New Zealanders, two couples and a Japanese hiking club. 4. The Ethical Event: The New Zealanders dropped a nearly naked and extremely weak sadhu at their feet. 5. Issue: Do we do all we can do to save him, or get on with our climb? 6. Other relevant facts: a. The guides did not want to help the man. b. The New Zealanders did not want to help the man. c. The Japanese did not want to help the man. d. The altitude was a real issue with respect to health. e. Helping him by going down a lower path would have ruined the “once in a lifetime” trip. 7. What they did: a. They clothed him. b. They gave him food. c. They left him in the sun and pointed out a hut to him that he might reach five hundred feet below. d. They went on with their descent.
