Study on Critical Thinking, Heuristics, and Cognitive Bias in Nursing, Lecture notes of Accounting

The concept of self-regulation, decision-making systems, heuristics, dominance structuring, and cognitive bias in the context of nursing. It delves into the importance of critical thinking, the quick and emotional system 1 decisions versus the slower, analytical system 2 decisions, the learning process of heuristics, the impact of dominance structuring on decision-making, and the immediate judgments that define cognitive bias. The document also discusses the role of learned values in shaping cognitive biases and the importance of relying on critical thinking and analytical reasoning to make informed decisions.

Self-regulation is having the capacity to change the behavior, emotions or even the attention of one’s own self. This means having the ability to control yourself contingent on what the situation may be. Critical thinking before action becomes a must for self-regulation. There are many influences on whether a person can obtain self-regulation and factors that can inhibit a person’s ability such as mental disorders like schizophrenias, depression, or even learning disabilities. There are two types of systems when we define how to make decision. First is system 1 which is the quick process of making decisions based on emotions. A prime example of this is nurse entering a patient’s room and finding the patient unresponsive. The quick action the nurse takes is to immediately check the patient for a pulse and start cardiopulmonary resuscitation or CPR. Nurses know that restarting blood circulation is that fastest action needed when a person has the condition known as cardiac arrest. The second type of system is system 2. This is a much slower process where we need to analyze and sit back to weigh the options and use critical thinking. A great example of system 2 is using the nursing process and determining if a patient has achieved the goals that the nurse set forth for them. The nurse must evaluate the patient and use critical thinking as well as assessment to make this judgment. The process is much slower and requires that critical thinking. The learning process for which we figure out a task or skill on our own is known as heuristics. Think of this learning process as something that is learned hands on. I am one of these types of learners and I learn best with hands on tasks. The best example of this was learning how to draw blood from patients. It took me a few tries: however, the process takes hands on learning of the proper technique. The learning process here was positive and I accomplished the task quickly which boosted my confidence. Thus, is has a positive impact on my self-confidence.
