GEN 499 Air Pollution GEN 499- General Education Capstone Introduction Pollution has been a significant issue for many, many years and is continuing to be a problem. Specifically, air pollution will be discussed and the impacts that it has on first and third world countries. This has become a societal global issue and there are many claims of what the causes of air pollution are. Global issues spread like wild fire, what impacts one place negative or positively can affect somewhere else in the same exact way! “According to the World Health Organization (WHO), each year air pollution is responsible for nearly seven million deaths around the globe” (Mackenzie, et al, 2021). How can we lower the amounts of pollutants that are being dumped into our air every day? Globally we have to fight together to resolve this issue. Much research has been started to determine different ways to lower the air pollution across the world. Pollution can be lessened by having climate change, social change, demographic changes, economic shifts, and technical developments if everyone came together to make it work. Background of Air Pollution As the population across the world is increasing, so is the air pollution. Humans have altered the Earth’s air quality over the years. A lot of the urban areas have become key points for the appearance of environmental and health hazards. “Increased industrial and agricultural production has intensified poorer countries’ production and use of both newer and older chemicals, including some formulations that are banned in other countries” (Environment and health in developing countries, 2010). All over the world there are numerous toxins that are being put out in not only the air, but water and the soil as well. The chemical pollutants in the atmosphere are known as aerosols; which influence things like climate change, quality of life, and solar radiation. In the big industries usually when smoke is rolling out it meant wealth was being produced but at the same time it is proposing health problems. During the 19th century there were different views on air pollution. “In British cities pollution came not from energy use or industry, but from natural biological processes, and blames disease on miasma” (Kovarik, 2020). Some even thought that coal smoke from industries could be an antidote to pollution. But as time went on and more research was done, many of the diseases, sickness, and mortality rates were brought to light. The negative effect of air pollution affects society globally. Air pollution is caused by numerous things. Carbon dioxide and methane are two gases that contribute to climate change by raises the earth’s temperature. When climate change occurs it can cause things like mold or pollen. Smog and soot are two other popular types of pollution. These things can come from emissions from fossil fuels react with sunlight, or from particles of chemicals that are just floating around in the air. “The World Health Organization (WHO) reports on six major air pollutants, namely particle pollution, ground-level ozone, carbon monoxide, sulfur oxides, nitrogen oxides, and lead” (Manisalidis, et al, 2020). An individual’s health is impacted by air pollution. When air pollution affects the environment it exposes people to diseases such as cardiovascular disease. “Air pollution has emerged as a key contributor to many chronic diseases, including CVD, and a large body supports both the acute and chronic cardiovascular effects of air pollution exposure” (Shohreh, et al, 2021). While this appears in adults, research has started to be done on the cardiovascular changes on children that may be due to air pollution. “The effects that pollution can have on human’s health are things like COPD, wheezing, asthma, respiratory disease, coughs, and pulmonary disease”
