Julianne Cirenza's National Honor Society Induction 2009 Speech The Four Pillars Welcome faculty, parents, friends and students, and a special welcome and congratulations to those newly selected to the National Honor Society. We’re very excited to welcome you into this group of talented individuals. Your strong academics, commitment to service and leadership, and strength of character have singled you out as the future leaders of the high school. You have all, in your own way, served as role models for the ASL community, and we would like to thank you for your contributions. As a member of the NHS you will have lots of opportunities to share your talents within the ASL community. We are so fortunate to have the lower, middle and high schools all within the same building. It seemed apparent that the NHS students, as the role models of the high school, could also become role models of the middle and lower schools. What better way to share our knowledge, our compassion, and our desire to help and to lead, than to spread it among the entire ASL community. This year, out of this idea, a series of new programs and activities were created to help make the NHS the link between these three divisions including: tutoring programs in the middle and high schools, kindergarten helpers at lunch time, and lower school after school activity helpers. In addition, we are also looking forward to a fundraiser for Invisible Children later in May in which we will not only raise money to further the spread of education in Africa, but will also use it as an opportunity to recycle old SAT and AP study books for the next generation of upperclassmen. However, these are not the only NHS contributions to ASL this year. Without the help of Sophia Palenberg, our secretary, and Rachel Brouwer, our treasurer, the international technology conference hosted at ASL would not have been nearly as much of a success. Sophia and Rachel helped to encourage and organize students to welcome and direct faculty from around the world. Both Sophia and Rachel have offered their invaluable ideas and assistance throughout the year, and I know that through their fantastic organizational skills and enthusiasm, the NHS will be in good hands next year. As usual, the NHS students also served as ambassadors to parents, directing them around the school on a number of occasions including back‐to‐school night and parent‐teacher conferences. And now I would like to introduce our speakers who will describe the four pillars, or foundation, of the NHS: academics, service, leadership and character. The following four speakers are being recognized not only because they exemplify the principles of these four pillars, but also because they have been avid NHS volunteers throughout the year. These students are athletes, musicians, artists and top students and yet they took the time to share their talents in ASL through the NHS. Firstly, I would like to introduce Reilly Bertasi as the speaker for the pillar of academics. I have been in a number of classes with Reilly and know firsthand just what a focused, highly motivated and talented classmate she is. Through her hard work and determination she has proven herself to be an excellent student, and always willingly shares her talent with others. For instance, this year she tutored a 7th grader in math through the NHS. Please welcome Reilly Bertasi. *** Thank you Reilly. Now I would like to introduce Ravina Ghanwani as our speaker for the pillar of service. I first met Ravina in 6th grade when I was a new student at ASL. She was always eager to show me around school or sit with me at lunch and made being a new student a lot easier. Ravina has continued to show a ceaseless commitment to service throughout her four years in the high school as the co‐President of South Asia club, working after school on the playground with lower schoolers tutoring a fourth grader in reading comprehension, or simply helping the kindergarteners during their math time at lunch. Please welcome Ravina Ghanwani. ***
