Police-minority relations have been the justification for many research studies within the past and especially within the present. Throughout this paper, we will review the recorded setting of police-minority relations, analyze the current police-minority relationship, and uncover expected steps to take to improve this relationship. History of Police-Minority Relations Looking at the past of the encounters between police officers and minority groups, it shall start off with an event that will go back to August 13, 1965, in the city of Los Angeles, California. A driver, Marquette Frye, was stopped by a local cop due to possible intoxication. When he was in questioning, a swarm of onlooking African Americans started inciting the cop. This settled on his decision for the police officer to call in for backup. Exactly when other law enforcement appeared on the scene, he began hitting the swarm of people with his baton. The news regarding these police officers quickly spread throughout the community and even a bigger amount of people gather around, created a riot and that lasted for about 5 days straight. A second chronicled event happened in 1967 in Detroit, Michigan when Detroit's authorities had decided to disturb a party that contained a population of mainly African Americans. While authorities were waiting upon the arrival of the transportation vehicles, a gathering quickly got together and started to begin protesting this act. Another riot had begun and this one persevered through five days as well. After the riots were over there were a total of 43 dead, 1,100 injured, and more than 7,000 taken into custody (Birzer and Roberson, 2018, p. 388). Additionally, there have been various events of police officers directing their focus towards minorities; this crime of action being done is racial profiling which is described as, "law enforcement agents impermissible using race, religion, character or public origin when deciding on who to investigate. Modern Relationships between Minorities and Police Officers In the present day in age, police agencies very much aware of their standing and how they are taken inside the minority groups and law enforcement is trying to reconnect with them in a more positive manner. One explicit way that they have been attempting to reconnect with them is, by coming up with activities for the community to have people get to know the police officers, and meet new faces, and develop a friendship and hopefully a bond (Racial Profiling, para, 1). Nonetheless, participation with the police is predicated in a huge part in the minority communities and on how minorities see the decency of their treatment is by the police (Edwards, para. 5). Knowing this and having this information, numerous minority groups do not put their trust within the law or the authorities and would prefer to deal with things all on their own without them. Police agencies have been aware of this distrust and have endeavored to enroll African Americans within the police academy, but that was unfortunately not enough to do it (Kaste, 2014). The justification for this is that policing is not what it used to be like Steps to Improve Police-Minority While it might appear to be nearly impossible to improve police-minority relations, there are a few focuses that may work. It is imperative to reveal insight upon the history that has reflected upon the present, for example, the police brutality that had happened in the cases referenced previously. This is huge on the grounds that they should be recognized and examined before successfully understanding the intricacy of contemporary police-minority relations.
