KEY- Example body for Junk food essay Claim- Junk food and pop should not be allowed in schools. (Keep in mind this should be the last sentence of the first paragraph. We did not do an introduction yet) Junk food can lead to serious health problems that are avoidable. According to recent studies, students can develop type 2 diabetes, heart problems, liver ailments, weakening immune systems, blood pressure, and kidney problems due to an increase in junk food intake. The same study also showed that these students who developed these health concerns also had a higher percentage of becoming obese. All of these unhealthy foods are avoidable and unnecessary to have in school. As a nation we can do better to ensure that children are in an environment that will allow them to have proper food intake for their health. Also, all of these health problems are avoidable if schools were forced to sell only healthy foods. A very large majority of children rely on the school for breakfast and lunch so only providing healthy options will decrease the amount of obese children and also decrease the chance of a major health concern. These health issues are not the only problem linked to having junk foods in school. Junk food is associated to children preforming worse mentally and physically. In an article posted on health.com by Gabrielle Glaser, she stated that students who eat a lot of junk food are found to have lower amounts of energy compared to the same age students who do not eat as much bad food. Glaser also stated that these foods are addictive to children which lead them to become fatter. Is it not the goal of a good school to have their students become more intelligent? The inclusion of junk food in the school building is affecting students’ work since it causes the body to tire out faster. Not only is this a problem for when students are in the classroom, but it also is a problem for when they go to play a sport. If the students are slower during the sport, they will not get the needed exercise their young bodies need to develop. In turn, students who do not play sports will be more tired when they arrive home which will hurt their chance to exercise or do homework as well. All of these scenarios are just adding extra fat to our bodies that is unneeded and unhealthy. Junk food and pop is not only decreasing our energy level because it is bad for the body, but junk food is also causing us to eat more food. According to the National Bureau of Economic Research, schools that have a higher amount of vending machines also have a higher percentage of overweight students. Glaser stated in her article that the taste of the junk food lures us in to continue to eat after we are full. The question here is why would we knowingly allow vending machines in our schools if it is a fact they cause kids to become more overweight? The study mentioned previously by the NBER should be all the proof that is needed to start taking vending machines out of schools. These machines are located all around the school also mean that a student is constantly passing one and has a chance to buy something. The food is a quick snack that tastes good leading them to continue to eat way past when their bodies are telling them to stop.
