While Cronon elaborates his claims, several factors that support his arguments can be selected more deeply. Firstly, Minnesota is located in the region known as the "Bread and Butter" or "Land of 10,000 lakes," located at the source of the mighty Mississippi River, North America's second largest river system. This mighty river originates from the state and drains the Hoosier heartland of the United States of America, influencing many states' agricultural production and economic systems in its southward course (Minnesota ,2013). Itasca State Park is the place where they marked the start of this vital waterway, illustrating Minnesota's place in the larger North American water grid. Also, Minnesota lies at the crossroads of several large ecological zones. The northern part has the Great Plains, where prairies are stretching towards the western frontier of the Rocky Mountains region. To the north, the state is bordered by a large chunk of the vast taiga area, equivalent to the boreal forests of Canada. To the east, the state is surrounded by the Great Lakes region, more specifically by Lake Superior; this geographical feature plays a vital role in the state's climate and the type of environment the state has. This location on the border that separates prairies from forests and lakes confers upon Minnesota a diverse flora and a variety of landscapes, from tallgrass practice through forests to water.
